Even Jemima Khan criticises her brother Zac’s failed campaign for London Mayor

Zac Goldsmith's sister Jemima has criticised how his campaign for London mayor was run, while former Tory Cabinet minister Baroness Warsi called it an "appalling dog whistle campaign". Tactics used in the fight for the post were branded a mistake by a senior Tory, while others have questioned the impact on the party. Ms Goldsmith tweeted: Sad that Zac's campaign did not reflect who I know him to be an eco friendly, independent-minded politician with integrity. She also congratulated Sadiq Khan, who is set to become London's first Muslim mayor, calling him a "great example to young Muslims". Their brother Ben Goldsmith later took to Twitter to defend him, claiming: "Labour planned to paint Zac as a racist from the start. The questions asked of Sadiq were legitimate." Barone...

Sadiq Khan became London Mayor as Labour gains constituencies

Sadiq Khan has secured victory as London mayor, with Labour winning in more constituencies than the Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith. Khan had 44 per cent of first preference votes, with Goldsmith trailing on 35 per cent. Green candidate Sian Berry looks likely to come in third place with six per cent of the vote. London wide turnout looks set to reach as high as 45.6 per cent, up 7.6 per cent on 2012. Goldsmith got off to a good start as the Conservatives secured an early win in Bexley and Bromley, but went on to win just five more constituencies to Khan's eight. The Tory candidate also won in Barnet and Camden, Croydon and Sutton, Havering and Redbridge, South West and West Central. However, Khan took the rest (and some by quite a large margin): Brent and Harrow, Cit...

Labour confident Sadiq Khan will beat Zac Goldsmith in London Mayoral election

The party's candidate has consistently held a solid lead over Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith, who is perceived to have suffered from running a negative campaign that controversially sought to link Mr Khan to extremism. And shadow chancellor John McDonnell set the Labour Party on the right path for success in the General Election in four years time. Labour has fought a strong campaign, working hard for every vote, standing up for working people who have been let down by the Tory party," he said. "If we can narrow that gap, we will demonstrate steady progress. "What we are looking to do is build over the next four years so that we steadily, steadily build our support and then we are ready for 2020." Shadow international development secretary Diane Abbott said a win for Mr ...

Family Guy spoofed Donald Trump, angering republican fans

In a bid for their first Emmy nomination, the show's creators released an image of their titular character, Peter Griffin, looking particularly orange and with ridiculous blonde hair. “As long as we’re voting for loud dumbmouths, can I get an Emmy?” reads the photo’s caption. Of course, as you likely suspected, they’re making fun of the Republican’s Presidential frontrunner, Donald Trump. Although MacFarlane is an avid Bernie Sanders supporter, some fans have been caught off guard by the cartoon, with some vowing never to watch the show again. The official Family GuyFacebook page posted the story, with commentators underneath expressing their outrage. “Wehhhh he's a loud mouth is all you can say as you mock the majority of REAL Americans voting for him. Trump is going to b...

Bangladesh among nations most prone to malware attacks

Apart from sharing a border with India, what do Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal have in common? They are all prime targets ofmalware attacks. Microsoft has released the 20th volume of its bi-annual Security Intelligence Report and it reveals an increasing trend in the number of malware encounters. Focusing on Q3 and Q5 2015, the report analyses the landscape for malware, threats and vulnerabilities by studying data collected from over 600 million computers across the world. It also lists the Palestinian Territories and Indonesia as prime targets. "We look at north of 10 million attacks on identities every day," Microsoft manager Alex Weinert told Reuters, adding that the attacks don't always succeed. According to the report, Japan, Finland, Norway and Sweden are some of the...

Bangladesh Bank heist: RCBC president resigns

The Rizal Commercial Banking Corp (RCBC) accepted the resignation of Lorenzo Tan as president and CEO of the Yuchengco-controlled financial institution effective immediately, the bank said in a statement released this evening. RCBC, however, cleared Tan of any wrongdoing, saying an internal investigation into the $81-million money laundering caper “had cleared [him] of any breach of bank rules and policies.” “He resigned to give the board a free hand in directing the course of the bank’s future,” RCBC said. In a separate statement, Tan said that “despite having been cleared of any wrongdoing, as president and CEO of RCBC, I take full moral responsibility for this sad incident in the history of the bank.” “With a heavy heart, I feel the time has come for me to move on and p...

Princess Diana’s final resting place to undergo renovation

The island where Princess Diana was laid to rest is undergoing extensive renovation work, it has been revealed. The work will be overseen by Diana's brother Charles Spencer and his wife Karen, and is set to be completed by August 2017 – in time to mark the 20th anniversary of the Princess of Wales' death. The late mother of Princes William and Harry was laid to rest on an island at the centre of the Althorp Estate, a stately home set within a 13,000-acre estate in Northampton owned by the Spencer family. Following Diana's death in August 1997, an oak tree was planted to mark each year of her life, along with hundreds of white water lilies and roses. There is also a temple for visitors to pay their respects, which features Diana's name engraved on the top. The news coincide...

London mayoral election voters are turned away in lists blunder

f     The London mayoral election started with an absolute shambles in one borough as voters were turned away from polling stations given incomplete electoral lists. Hundreds of residents in Barnet said they were told they could not vote without their polling card, while some carrying the document said they were also refused. Arjun Mittra, a Labour councillor for East Finchley ward, said the logistical nightmare affected every one of the borough’s 155 polling stations. Out of the seven people who came to my polling station in the first 10 minutes, only one was able to vote. She had come at 7am to vote because she was going away for the day, she said she was disenfranchised. It's a disgrace. For the first half an hour after voting started the majority of voters were turned away,...

HC scraps 16th amendment

The High Court today scrapped the 16th amendment to constitution that empowered the parliament to impeach Supreme Court judges for incapacity or misconduct. A three-member special bench led by Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury by majority view declared the amendment illegal and unconstitutional following a writ petition that challenged the legality of the 16th amendment. After the ruling, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the government will appeal against it. The government will not have to take HC permission for appealing against today’s verdict. The HC has given the government a certificate that is needed for appeal. The House led by the Awami League on September 17, 2014 unanimously passed the 16th amendment and regained the power available in the 1972 constitution to...

How I made £6,500 by reporting a single empty home and you could too

Properties stand empty and derelict. Meanwhile, rents and house prices soar and families are made homeless because they can't make payments. It's a national scandal. The good news - as one mum found out - is that by taking action yourself, you can not only help get a home back into use, but make yourself (and a local charity) a very tidy sum. Meet mum of two Levinia Gluck, who decided it was about time a home in Hendon, London, was lived in again. “I always wondered why such a potentially great property across the road from a park and with good access to the North Circular was sitting empty and abandoned," she explained. Late last year she came across YouSpotProperty, and realised there was a way to not just get the home back on the market, but get rewarded for it too. She...
