Alberta declares state of emergency as wildfire forces Fort McMurray evacuation

The Canadian province of Alberta has declared a state of emergency after a raging wildfire destroyed dozens of homes, engulfed several neighbourhoods and forced the hurried evacuation of the entire city of Fort McMurray. More than 80,000 residents were ordered to leave the northern Alberta city after shifting winds saw the blaze go from being largely controlled to a “nasty, ugly” inferno as described by the local fire chief. By Wednesday, more than 250 firefighters were fighting the fire, assisted by helicopters and air tankers. Officials estimated that 1,600 structures had been damaged or destroyed by Wednesday night. As flames fanned south on Thursday, officials also issued mandatory evacuation orders for the Anzac, Gregoire Lake Estates and Fort McMurray First Nation co...

Fire At London Station Causes Commuter Chaos

A fire on the tracks on one of London's busiest railway routes into the capital has caused chaos for commuters. Firefighters were called to Vauxhall railway station in south London at around 2.40am and the track could be seen smouldering hours later when commuter traffic was at its peak. One of London's busiest stations, Clapham Junction, has been evacuated due to overcrowding and British Transport Police are urging people to avoid the area. Electrical cabling and the power to the tacks at Vauxhall had to be switched off to allow the emergency service staff to reach the blaze. London Fire Brigade station manager John Ryan said: "Once the power was isolated firefighters quickly got to work to tackle the fire. "We're currently assessing how much electrical cabling has been a...

Bangladesh-India-Myanmar cooperation for Hilsa conservation

Bangladesh, India and Myanmar today agreed to work together for collaborative efforts to conserve Hilsa, the national fish of Bangladesh. The pledge was taken in a two-day long regional seminar Sustainable Management of Hilsa Fishery in the Bay of Bengal Region at a Dhaka hotel this afternoon. Bangladesh alone produces 60 percent of the Hilsa in the world. Last year, the yield was 3.87 lakh metric tonnes. India and Myanmar constitutes the rest of the 95 percent that these three countries produce together. Bangladesh is already in an agreement with India, a memorandum (MoU) inked during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka, on “blue economy” and maritime cooperation in the Bay of Bengal. Barclays launches zero deposit deal for first-time home buyers

First-time buyers will be able to get on to the property ladder without needing any deposit under a new deal launched by a major bank. Barclays Mortgages has revamped its "family springboard" mortgage, removing the need for first-time buyers and home movers to put down any deposit at all when buying a home using this mortgage. The deal has previously allowed people to climb on to the property ladder with a 5% deposit, provided that a "helper" - often the home buyer's parents - puts cash equating to 10% of the house purchase price into a savings account linked to the mortgage. Under the new deal, only the 10% contribution from parents is needed. This cash will be returned to the borrower's parents after three years with interest added - provided the borrower has kept up wit...

California Muslims sue over hijab discrimination

Two lawsuits filed in California claim that Muslim women were discriminated against in separate incidents because of their religion and for wearing the hijab. One of the suits claims that police in Long Beach forcibly removed a suspect's headscarf while another suit alleges that a group of women were kicked out of a Laguna Beach coffee house for being Muslim. According to the complaint against the city of Long Beach and its police department, Kirsty Powell and her husband were pulled over by two officers while driving home in May of last year. She was subsequently arrested on two outstanding warrants -- one linked to her sister allegedly falsely using her identity and one in relation to a 2002 shoplifting incident at a grocery store. Powell, who is African American, allege...

DMP bans stickers of various professions on vehicles

Police will not allow use of stickers on vehicles identifying various professions like journalists, police and lawyers. The decision has been taken so that criminals cannot commit crimes using vehicles carrying the stickers of different professionals, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said at a briefing at DMP media centre this morning. Legal action will be taken against the offenders, he added. But organizations can use painted logos on their vehicles, the DMP commissioner said. The DMP already started its drive against these kinds of stickers from April 24, Asaduzzaman informed. Moreover, DMP police will not allow three or more people on a motorcycle, the DMP boss said adding that if anyone is found violating the instruction, he or she will be fined.

Nadiya Hussain defends the birthday cake she made for The Queen: ‘I don’t care what people think’

While the Queen seemed impressed with Hussain’s effort, many viewers took to Twitter to brand the three-tiered cake wonky. Speaking on Loose Women on Friday, the Great British Bake Off winner insisted that she ‘couldn’t care less’ about the criticism. If I cared about what people said, I would never leave my house, she told the panel. So you know what? Actually I couldn’t care less. Talking about what it was like to meet the monarch, Hussain admitted that she ‘freaked out’ a little bit. “It went really, really well…. I did say, ‘good morning, Your Majesty,’ then I said, 'happy birthday, Your Majesty, it’s afternoon!’” I did freak out a little bit. I only got two minutes with her but I thought in those two minutes she’s really nice. Hussain’s cake, which was presented to Th...

Bank of Mum and Dad propping up a quarter of 2016 mortgages
