Bangladesh Bank heist: Attackers hacked SWIFT software

The attackers who stole $81 million from the Bangladesh central bank probably hacked into software from the SWIFT financial platform that is at the heart of the global financial system, said security researchers at British defense contractor BAE Systems. SWIFT, a cooperative owned by 3,000 financial institutions, confirmed to Reuters that it was aware of malware targeting its client software. Its spokeswoman Natasha Deteran said SWIFT would release on Monday a software update to thwart the malware, along with a special warning for financial institutions to scrutinize their security procedures. The new developments now coming to light in the unprecedented cyber-heist suggest that an essential lynchpin of the global financial system could be more vulnerable than previously u...

Saudi Arabia, 9/11, and the secret papers that could ignite a diplomatic war

Twenty-eight secret pages of a report locked away in a room in the Capitol in Washington lie in the centre of a crisis between America and Saudi Arabia which threatens to have severe and widespread repercussions. The US Congress is considering legislation which would enable the families of victims of the September 11 attacks to sue Saudi Arabia, presented by the West as its most valuable ally in the Middle East, over alleged links with al-Qaeda terrorists who carried out the attacks on New York and Washington. The issue had cast a long shadow over the recent visit of President Barack Obama to Riyadh, with the Saudis threatening to sell off $750bn of American assets they hold if the bill is passed by Congress. The classified pages are in a file titled “Finding, Discussion a...

London’s one millionth marathon will cross the finishing line

If things go according to plan, Sunday should be a memorable one in the Finill household. Julia Finill will be handing out finishing medals at the London marathon in which both her husband Chris and their youngest son, Nick, will be taking part. The aim is for Mrs Finill to present father and son with their medals, giving the family a unique perspective on an event in which one of the 38,000 runners taking part will become the millionth person across the finishing line since the marathon began in 1981. Making the family’s participation even more special is the fact that, while Nick, 22, hopes to be picking up his first London medal, Chris, 57, is aiming to collect his 36th, making him a member of an increasingly elite club who have participated in every single London marat...

Obama to use Germany visit to push trans Atlantic trade deal

President Barack Obama hopes to build momentum during a two-day visit to Germany to help push a trans-Atlantic trade deal between the U.S. and Europe over the finish line. He knows a tough sell awaits him, particularly in Germany where the opposition is fierce. Other issues will be on the table when Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel meet Sunday for talks, chiefly efforts to counter the Islamic State group, improve cooperation on counterterrorism measures, and encourage countries to share law enforcement information. IS says it was responsible for attacks that killed 30 people in Brussels last month. Obama also wants to give Merkel a public pat on the back for her "courageous" handling of the migrant issue. Her decision to allow the resettlement in her country of hu...

Third of curry houses could close as tough immigration rules block chefs coming to UK

Around 600 curry houses across the country have shut in the past 18 months and there are fears that a further 4,000 restaurants - around a third of the industry - could follow. Curry house owners say the increasingly tough immigration rules mean they are struggling to bring highly-skilled chefs over from Asia and it is making it difficult for these businesses to grow. As a result, restaurants are increasingly unable to provide adequate customer service or fulfil orders. British Curry Awards founder, Enam Ali, and his supporters are campaigning for the Government to ease immigration restrictions. He has sent a 75-page document to the Prime Minister, the Home Secretary, the Business Secretary and employment minister Priti Patel, to urge them to introduce one-year visas for c...
