Former Thai prime minister, dead at 83

Banharn Silpa-archa, a provincial political powerbroker who served a scandal-ridden 16 months as Thailand's prime minister in 1995-96, has died at age 83. His death early Saturday morning was announced by Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital, where he was admitted Thursday after an asthma attack. Banharn was considered a master of pork barrel politics, making his home province of Suphanburi, in Thailand's central rice-growing region, one of the country's most developed and prosperous-looking. His domination of politics and business there led to it being dubbed "Banharnburi." However, his wily political ways played out badly at the national level. Critics charged that corruption and mismanagement of the economy during his stint as prime minister paved the way for the collapse of Thai...

Barack Obama hits back at Boris Johnson and explains why he moved Winston Churchill bust in the Oval Office

The Independent President Barack Obama arrives at Downing Street to meet with British Prime Minister David Cameron (Picture: [copyright]) Barack Obama has hit back after suggestions by Boris Johnson that he harboured an “ancestral dislike of the British empire” because of his Kenyan heritage. The Mayor of London had recounted a story in which he suggested Mr Obama had moved a bust of Winston Churchill from the Oval Office when he became president. But Mr Obama explained that he still had a second bust of the former prime minister in his private quarters – and revealed why he had moved the one in the Oval Office. “My private office is called the Treaty Room. Right outside the door of the Treaty Room so that I see it every day, including on weekends when I’m going into that ...

Cash strapped ISIS killing its own fighters so ORGANS can be extracted and sold on the black market

ISIS has been killing its injured fighters so there organs can be extracted and sold on the black market abroad, it has been claimed. Doctors in Iraq say they have been threatened by fighters to remove the organs from wounded militants. It is believed they then sell the organs abroad to raise money. A report by an unnamed source in the al-Sabah newspaper said: "Doctors were threatened to take out the body organs of a wounded ISIL militant,' the report said. As reported by Fars News, it is also believed that prisoners held by ISIS have been forced to give blood to the terror group. It emerged today that hundreds of women are now fighting for ISIS in Libya - many as suicide bombers - after being "promoted" from their roles as wives. Experts say as many as 1,000 women are wit...

10 killed in separate attacks from Jan

Ten people were killed and a total of 366 others of three religious communities were injured in separate attacks across the country from this January, according to Bangladesh Hindu Buddha Christian Oikyo Parishad. The attacks were made over religious issues, land dispute, extortion and land occupation, Rana Das Gupta, general secretary of the organisation, said a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity in Dhaka this afternoon. He said that Jogeswar Dasadhikari, a Hindu priest at a temple in Debiganj of Panchagarh, was one of the victims of the attacks throughout the country. US President Obama erges UK to reject Brexit

US President Barack Obama arrives at Stansted airport for a visit to the UK. In 1939, President Franklin D Roosevelt offered a toast to King George VI in the White House. “I am persuaded that the greatest single contribution our two countries have been enabled to make to civilisation, and to the welfare of peoples throughout the world,” he said, “is the example we have jointly set by our manner of conducting relations between our two nations.” Nearly 80 years later, the United Kingdom remains a friend and ally to the United States like no other. Our special relationship was forged as we spilt blood together on the battlefield. It was fortified as we built and sustained the architecture for advancing stability and prosperity in Europe, and our democratic values around the g...

Waterways strike: Sufferings for thousands

Waterway workers have gone on an indefinite strike, demanding that their 15-point charter of demands be met. The demands include a pay hike and steps to prevent thefts and robberies on the waterways. Earlier, too, in 2009, 2010 and 2013, the workers had struck work over their demands. Vessel-owners had increased their allowances only in 2013. “There is no alternative but to go on strike. Price rise has made our lives miserable. We demand a pay hike only for survival,” Ashiqur Rahman, general secretary of Bangladesh Jahaji Shramik Federation (BJSF), told The Independent yesterday. On Wednesday, a 12-hour tripartite meeting was held on the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority premises, with shipping minister Shajahan Khan in the chair. But the meeting was inconclusive...

Report warning of rip offs by online travel agents urges top level inquiry

A report calls for an urgent inquiry as it warns of rip-offs by online travel agents Online travel agents are exploiting, misleading, and ripping off customers to such an extent an urgent top level probe is needed to police them, a Lords report warns. Rigged pricing, fake reviews, doctored search options, and "intimidation" of hoteliers to stop them offering cheaper deals have all been identified as dodgy practices deployed in the burgeoning digital travel sector by the upper house's EU Committee. Peers have insisted a rapid investigation by the Completions and Markets Authority is needed to bring the industry into line. Committee chairman and Labour peer Lord Whitty said customers are getting a raw deal when they log on for travel bargains. "We heard of an array of worry...

MPs shout racist at Cameron after comments on Sadiq Khan during PMQs

PM David Cameron was met with cries of racist in the House of Commons as he joined attacks on Labour’s London mayoral candidate, Sadiq Khan, claiming he has shared a platform with extremists. The prime minister laid into Khan during prime minister’s questions, claiming the Labour candidate had nine times shared a platform with a known Islamist extremist called Sulaiman Ghani. The attack echoed those made by Zac Goldsmith, the Conservative mayoral candidate, who has claimed his opponent would be soft on crime because he “provided cover for extremists”. In the Commons, Cameron said: “If we are going to condemn not just violent extremism but also extremism that seeks to justify violence in any way it is very important we do not back these people and we do not appear on platfo...

Deficit figures an embarrassment for George Osborne as he misses targets set last month

George Osborne, the Chancellor, has been dealt an embarrassing blow as official figures revealed that he has failed to meet his deficit reduction targets. The Government borrowed £4.8bn last month, excluding costs related to stakes in bailed-out banks, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This put the public sector’s total borrowing in the 2015-16 financial year at £74bn. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), which produces official forecasts for the Government, updated its forecasts for the deficit only last month . Revealing the OBR's forecast at the Budget in March, the Chancellor announced that the Government expected to borrow £72.2bn in the fiscal year - a projection £1.8bn wide of the mark. It quickly became apparent that the UK would have to...
