The standing committee on finance ministry should hold an open hearing over the Bangladesh Bank heist, distinguished fellow of Centre for Policy Dialogue Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya said today. CPD observes a lack of co-ordination among the government over the issue, Bhattacharya said at a press conference at CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka this morning. The CPD organised the press conference on national budget for the 2016-17 fiscal. Hackers stole US$101 million from the BB account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on February 4. Powerful earthquake kills 77 in Ecuador

A powerful earthquake killed at least 77 people, injured hundreds more, ravaged coastal towns and sent residents fleeing for higher ground in Ecuador on Saturday night. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Ecuador's Pacific coast and was felt hundreds of miles (km) away in the capital of Quito as well as in the large commercial city of Guayaquil, where rubble lay strewn in the streets and some buildings were cracked or partially collapsed. A bridge in the city collapsed on top of car, crushing it. The earthquake was Ecuador's worst in decades and officials said the death toll was likely to rise even higher as rescue teams headed into the hardest-hit areas. "It was terrifying, we were all scared and we're still out in the streets because we're worried about aftershocks,"...

Top tips for nervous travellers

Missing your flight, not packing the right clothes or even bad weather can all impact the outcome of a trip. But there are some things you can do to take the edge off before and during a trip away. First, remember: You're on holiday and you deserve it! Leave all that stress from work, family and friends behind by letting people know you'll be out of touch and will get back to them when you return. Then, turn your phone off and resist all temptation to check emails that will give you anxiety. Next, plan. Exploring somewhere new is fun and exciting but if you're the type of person who prefers a little familiarity, do some research on the area you'll be visiting ahead of time like checking out maps and restaurants so you're not overwhelmed when you arrive. Last, know you're l...

Why Business Transparency Is the Real Lesson of the Panama Papers

When a leak causes the downfall of one Prime Minister and forces another to publish his tax returns - quickly followed by a clutch of his counterparts doing the same - it's safe to say we are in the middle of more than a typical media frenzy. The political repercussions from the publication of the Panama Papers are being felt from Iceland to Downing Street and from China to Argentina. Here in the UK, it is now hard to see how anyone running for high office will in future be able to avoid full transparency over their tax affairs. Tighter restrictions on the way wealthy individuals move money across borders to reduce their tax burden seem inevitable. But, while we may be transfixed by the temporary discomfort felt by David Cameron and a host of other high-profile individuals...

EU referendum: 100,000 financial services jobs at risk from Brexit says PWC

Up to 100,000 financial service jobs could be scrapped by the end of the decade if the UK broke away from the EU, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). The accountancy firm's findings, part a report commissioned by lobbying group TheCityUK, mean a Brexit could reduce the sector's contribution to the economy by up to £12bn ($16.9bn). "Major firms from across the world come to London to access Europe's Single Market, bringing with them jobs and investment," said Chris Cummings, chief executive of the TheCityUK. "While Brexit may not be ruinous for the UK economy, it does risk damaging the UK-based financial services sector, particularly over the short-term, delaying investment decisions and reducing activity. It also threatens the overall competitiveness of the UK as a ...

Cameron wouldn’t last 30 seconds if he lost EU vote says Ken Clarke

David Cameron David Cameron would be overthrown as prime minister within 30 seconds of a vote to leave the EU in the June referendum, Kenneth Clarke has said. In a direct challenge to Cameron, who told MPs this week that he would remain in office to negotiate Britain’s exit in the event of a vote to leave the EU, the veteran pro-European said it would be “farcical” for him to continue. The former chancellor told the Week in Westminster on BBC Radio 4: “The prime minister wouldn’t last 30 seconds if he lost the referendum and we’d be plunged into a Conservative leadership crisis which is never a very edifying sight.” The intervention by Clarke, whose frontbench career was revived by Cameron a year before the 2010 general election, will be seen by No 10 as particularly unhel...

Appearing on local show, Loose Women, the 31-year-old Bangladeshi baker from Luton, UK announced that she will be baking the Queen's 90th birthday cake, reports International Business Times. "I'm making the Queen's 90th birthday cake," she said. "'How often can you say that you are baking the Queen's birthday cake in one sentence?" She initially thought the request to bake for the Queen was a joke, but her agent confirmed the royal invitation. And while it is clearly an honour to be invited to bake the cake to mark the Queen's milestone birthday, Hussain, who was the first ever Muslim winner of GBBO, admitted she was so nervous that she couldn't even 'look at the oven'. "I have to give it to her on ...

Belgium minister quits in Brussels airport security row

The Belgian transport minister has resigned over accusations she ignored lapses in security at Brussels airport before the attacks of 22 March. Opposition parties had been demanding Jacqueline Galant step down. They had leaked a confidential EU document, dating from 2015, which criticised security measures at Belgium's airports. Attacks on Zaventem airport and a Brussels metro station by so-called Islamic State left 32 people dead. Prime Minister Charles Michel had previously defended Ms Galant, and he had told parliament that her office had not seen the critical EU report. However on Friday morning, following the publication of further documents on Thursday evening, Michel said that "contrary to what was communicated to me" the report had been discussed, according to publ...
