Brexit would cost every household in the UK £4300 Osborne warns

Quitting the European Union would leave households £4,300 a year worse off, George Osborne warned as he prepared to release in-depth Treasury analysis on the cost of Brexit. Britain's economy would shrink by 6% by 2030 if the country replicated Canada's trading agreements as advocated by Boris Johnson, according to the Chancellor. The 200-page Government report assessing the long-term costs and benefits of EU membership as well as life outside shows the country would be left "permanently poorer". In an article for The Times, Mr Osborne said: "The conclusion is clear: for Britain's economy and for families, leaving the EU would be the most extraordinary self-inflicted wound." The study will say none of the alternative options to full EU membership would leave Britain with a...

Luton airport makes the leap from laughing stock to global transit hub

Next month Luton will become the sole European airport to serve St Helena - the British possession in the South Atlantic. The island’s new airport is due to be officially opened by Prince Edward on 21 May, and within 48 hours the first charter from Luton is scheduled to touch down. A new start-up carrier called Atlantic Star Airlines will fly the route, which includes a refuelling stop at Banjul in Gambia. The airline’s co-founder, Richard Brown, told The Independent: “We chose Luton because the team there were keen to support the service and add St Helena to their route portfolio.” The Bedfordshire airport, owned by Luton Borough Council, has had a chequered history. The former RAF fighter base grew rapidly in the 1960s and early 70s as package-holiday charter flights exp...

Hundreds of Migrants Die In Mediterranean

Several hundred migrants are believed to have died after four boats capsized in the Mediterranean. Italy's president, Sergio Mattarella, said there had been a migrant tragedy, as unconfirmed reports suggested the vast majority of those on board the vessels were Somalis, trying to cross the sea from Egypt to Europe. Speaking at a prizegiving ceremony in Rome, Mr Mattarella said Europe needed to reflect in the face of "yet another tragedy in the Mediterranean in which, it seems, several hundred people have died." He did not give any further details. The Italian coastguard said earlier they knew nothing about the reported disaster. It comes as a report by academics accused EU policymakers of "killing by neglect" by reducing search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean. It ...

India says Koh-i-Noor diamond belongs to Britain

A priceless diamond that is part of Queen Elizabeth's crown was given to Britain and not stolen, the Center today told the Supreme Court, which is hearing a suit seeking its return. The 108-carat Kohinoor gem, which came into British hands during the colonial era, is the subject of a historic ownership dispute and has been claimed by at least four countries including India. But India's Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar said the 19th century Sikh king Ranjit Singh had given the stone to the British. It was given voluntarily by Ranjit Singh to the British as compensation for help in the Sikh Wars. The Koh-i-Noor is not a stolen object, he told the Supreme Court. The court was hearing a suit filed by the All India Human Rights & Social Justice Front, a non-governmental organ...

Queen turned food taster over bodyguards packed lunches

For thousands of years the kings and queens of almost every civilization have relied on ‘volunteer’ food tasters to protect them from culinary harm. Vladimir Putin is thought to employ one – though it did little for Emperor Claudius in 54AD (whether it really was poison or the bad breath of his food taster, Halotus, which did for the Roman ruler, history does not record). All the more remarkable, then, to learn that Queen Elizabeth, who in her 63 years on the throne has probably eaten more royal meals than most of us have had…well…hot dinners, should not only have revived the ancient practice but to have enjoyed turning the tables. Speaking ahead of this week's 90th birthday celebrations, warrant officer John Ross has revealed that the monarch was in the habit of checking ...

Super gonorrhoea is spreading across Britain and will become untreatable, doctors fear

A national alert was triggered by Public Health England last September after the rare strain of the sexually transmitted superbug was detected in 15 people. The number of confirmed cases has now risen to 34 and, according to reports, there is "huge concern" among doctors that it is spreading across the UK. And experts said it is risk of becoming untreatable if the only fully effective antibiotic remaining fails. There have been efforts to track down the sexual partners of those infected with the disease, which can cause infertility. “Failure to respond appropriately will jeopardise our ability to treat gonorrhoea effectively and will lead to poorer health outcomes for individuals and society as a whole” Dr Elizabeth Carlin. However, Public Health England (PHE) is understoo...

There are 5 things that could cause undecided voters to back Brexit not one of them is immigration

French President Francois Hollande, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, European Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Phil Hogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are seen near burning bales of straw set on… The latest polls on Britain's referendum over whether the country should stay or leave the European Union show a vastly mixed picture of what the result could possibly be. This week, we've had one poll that showed support for a Brexit — Britain leaving the EU — is ahead of staying, while another poll showed that the remain vote is in poll position. However, polls are pretty pointless for predicting the outcome of the referendum, and are not a major pricing point when calculating the odds, Jamie Loughead, head of politics at the UK bookmaker Star Sports, told B...

Saudi Arabia threatens to sell off US assets if Congress passes 9/11 bill

Officials in Saudi Arabia have reportedly told the Obama administration they will sell off hundreds of billions of dollars of American assets if Congress passes a bill that would allow the Saudi government to be held responsible for any role in the September 11 attacks. On the eve of President Barack Obama’s visit to Saudi Arabia, the New York Times said the White House had been lobbying Congress to block the bill’s passage and that the threat from Saudi Arabia had been the subject of intense talks. It said that Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi foreign minister, delivered the kingdom’s message last month during a trip to Washington, telling legislators that Saudi Arabia would be forced to sell up to $750bn in treasury securities and other assets in the United States before they c...
