Muslim anti-Isis march not covered by mainstream media outlets, say organisers

Muslim anti-Isis march not covered by mainstream media outlets, say organisers Organisers of an anti-Isis march that took place in London last week have spoken out after mainstream media outlets failed to cover it. Thousands of people took part in the annual UK Arbaeen Procession, coordinated by the Husaini Islamic Trust UK, on Sunday. Although Shia Muslims take part in the march each year to mark the Arbaeen, or mourning, anniversary of Imam Husain - a seventh-century leader who fought for social justice - this year organisers decided to use the event as a platform to denounce terrorism following the recent Isis attacks in Paris, Beirut and elsewhere. Organiser Waqar Haider said: "This year we had hundreds of placards which were basically saying ‘no’ to terrorism and ‘no’...

Salman Khan acquitted of all charges in hit and run case

Actor Salman Khan has been acquitted in the 2002 hit-and-run incident, the Bombay High Court ruled on Thursday. The Bombay High Court observed that the prosecution has failed to establish the case against Salman Khan in connection to the 2002 hit-and-run case. Salman Khan was convicted of all charges by a sessions court earlier this year in the case relating to 2002 when Salman’s Toyota Land Cruiser had crashed into five men sleeping outside a bakery on Hill Road in Bandra in the early hours of September 28. One person was killed and four others were injured. But later, the Bombay HC suspended the sentence after the actor appealed against his conviction. The Indian Express.

Ban Donald Trump from UK petition on course to set new record

Hundreds of thousands of people rushed to sign after Mr Trump suggested Muslims should be barred from the US. More than 400,000 people have backed the "Block Donald J Trump from UK entry" call, with more than six signatures per second at its peak, and it is on track to beat the current record of 446,482 signatures on a petition calling for the UK to accept more asylum seekers and increase refugee support. Suzanne Kelly, who originally lodged the document, said it was "one of many little acts of defiance" against Mr Trump. The 54-year-old from Aberdeen said: "I started the petition on 28 November. It was after the petition was lodged that Mr Trump made his anti-Muslim remarks. These confirmed for me that what I did in starting this petition was right. "Is there a group this...

Teens think Facebook uncool, but still use it

American teens think Facebook has definitely lost its cool factor, but use it as much as ever. A survey released Monday by Forrester Research found 78 percent of US teenagers use Facebook, a figure unchanged from last year. That’s more than any other “social” site except the video-sharing service YouTube, used by 80 percent of teens. The cool factor isn’t there for the leading social network, Forrester found: 65 percent of online users ages 12 to 17 say Facebook is cool, far less than services such as YouTube (80 percent), Snapchat (79 percent) and Facebook-owned Instagram (78 percent). “Sure, young people don’t think Facebook is cool – but that doesn’t mean they’ve stopped using it,” the report said. Forrester analysts said Facebook “generates more hyper-usage than any ot...

Under London: The secret world beneath the city’s streets

You may not realise it but your daily commute on the Underground might be taking you past London’s long disused “ghost” tube stations or the 23 mile-long “Mail Rail” that once carried four million letters a day. If you travel the full length of the Northern Line the tube will take you past several deep-level WWII shelters that were each capable of housing up to 8,000 people. Once a hive of activity, they are now left in almost perpetual darkness while the Tube network continues around them. Elsewhere, you will pass through some of the more grizzly remnants of medieval London. Between South Kensington and Knightsbridge, the Piccadilly Line curves to avoid one of the city’s many plague pits where Londoners were buried on mass as Yersinia pestis swept the city in the 14th and...

Skin care for winter

Time flies! And winter is here; wasn't it just the other day I was writing on winter skin issues? Here I go again… During this season both skin and hair need a fair bit of attention. Quite honestly for most of us having oily or combination skin, winter is gentler than most other seasons. The heat and humidity in summer lead to breakouts of pimples and acne; winter ushers in a relative relief from these woes. However, it is still important to keep your pores unclogged and breathing at all times. Twice a day, clean your skin using gel cleansers or neem soap. Lather in a circular motion to remove excess oil and dirt. The natural oil in the skin attracts dust from the surroundings and if left to settle on the surface of the skin, will create irritation and blockage leading to ...

The grandee was charged with looking at reforming the Lords after the government’s humiliating defeat on tax credits. The Government will seek to overturn a defeat by peers on its plans to exclude 16 and 17-year-olds from voting in the EU referendum on British membership.
