Fresh Power Cuts Slow Storm Desmond Recovery

Engineers will begin restoring power to 42,000 properties in the North West after unforeseen flood damage at one of the city's main substations caused another widespread outage on Monday afternoon. More than 19,000 Electricity North West customers in Lancaster are still relying on emergency generators which were mobilised on Sunday night as the damage caused by Storm Desmond became clear. In Cumbria, an estimated 1,450 properties remain without power, as engineers wait for floodwaters to recede so they can assess the damage and make essential repairs. In some cases, specialists have only been able to gain access to substations by boat. Sixteen severe flood warnings remain in place across northwest England, signalling a danger to life. The Met Office has issued a severe wea...

Austrian boy finds 100,000 Euro in River

Police in Austria are investigating how bank notes worth tens of thousands of euros ended up in the River Dan-ube. The notes were found floating down the river in Vienna on Saturday, leading one passer-by to jump in and sal-vage the money. A police spokesman told the BBC that the recovered money was worth some €100,000 (£72,000; $108,000). Police said there were no crimes were recorded in the area and that it was not clear where the money originated. Reports in Austria said officers had first believed the money - made up of €500 and €100 notes - was counterfeit, but they now believe the notes to be genuine. They were first alerted when bystanders spotted a boy in the river on Saturday. Fearing he was attempting suicide, they called police, only to find he was trying to ret...

feaLeytonstone stabbing suspect was reported to Met Police by his own family three weeks before attack

The terror suspect accused of slashing a man with a knife on the London Underground was reported to police by his own family three weeks before the incident, it has been reported. The behaviour of Muhaydin Mire, 29, who appeared in court charged with attempted murder, gave his family cause for concern and they asked the Met and mental health services to intervene. Scotland Yard said it had been involved with a family member before Mire allegedly shouted "this is for Syria" during the gory incident, but insisted "there was no mention of radicalisation", according to the Telegraph. A statement from the police force said: "The police were contacted by a family member approximately three weeks before the incident on Saturday. "The conversation related entirely to health relate...

Plans to build City’s tallest skyscraper unveiled

Plans to build the City’s tallest skyscraper and London's second highest building – rivalled only by the Shard – have been unveiled today. Singapore-based developers Aroland Holdings are seeking planning permission to build a 73 storey tower at One Undershaft in the City, between the Leadenhall Building and 30 St Mary’s Axe. Standing 309.6 metres tall, the scheme would dwarf its skyscraper neighbours and nearly match The Shard. The proposed office scheme, which has been designed by architect Eric Parry, will also have a viewing platform higher than that of the Shard, and “London’s highest public restaurant” as well as shops and a public square on the ground linking St Andrew Undershaft and St Helen’s Bishopsgate churches. Parry, who is also behind Generali’s 10 Fenchurch A...

Bangladesh reviewing ties with Pakistan

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali today said the government is assessing the relationship between Bangladesh and Pakistan and thinking about what measures need to be taken over the reaction of Islamabad after the execu-tion of two war criminals last month. “The whole matter is a continuous process,” he said while addressing a discussion at WVA auditorium in Dhaka. Ekattorer Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee organised the discussion on “Relationship between Bangladesh-India in the Touchstone of Time” to mark the 44th anniversary of the recognition of India to Bangladesh as an inde-pendent country. Jeremy Corbyn urged to pull out of Stop the War Christmas fundraiser

Tristram Hunt, the former shadow education secretary, has called on Jeremy Corbyn to pull out of a Christmas fundraising event organised by the “disreputable” Stop the War coalition. Hunt called on the Labour leader not to attend the event in light of its decision to picket the Labour party’s headquarters last week and the “ugly comments” it has made about the shadow foreign secretary, Hilary Benn. Hunt told the Andrew Marr Show on BBC1 on Sunday: “I don’t think that he should go there. Stop the War coalition picketed the Labour party headquarters when we were trying to run a phone-bank for the Oldham byelection, so they were preventing the election of a Labour member of parliament. “We have also seen some pretty ugly comments from them about Hilary Benn and the fact that ...

Sylhet beat Barisal by 9 wickets

Sylhet Super Stars made an unbelievable turnabout in the BPL by bowling out the Barisal Bulls for 58, the lowest-ever total in the BPL and then chasing it with ease to win by nine wickets. The massive swing in fortune - Sylhet lost five of their six matches previously - coincided with Shahid Afridi replacing Mushfiqur Rahim as captain for the remainder of the tournament. This was also the second time in the competition that Barisal were bowled out for a below-100 score and the fourth instance in this year's competition for the team batting first. Sylhet also completed the fastest chase, closing out the game with 51 balls to spare, overtaking the previous record help by Comilla Victorians, who beat Rangpur Riders with 49 balls to spare. It was all so different before the ga...
