Govt using state to curb media

    The ruling party in Bangladesh is using state mechanisms to curb the media, says a report published by London-based rights group Article 19. The report finds that violation of freedom of expression in Bangladesh rose alarmingly to over 33 percent in 2014, what was 12.5% in the previous year. “An overall 23% were carried out by the police, special forces such as the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and detective branch of police,” the report said. Forger arrested after liking wanted poster on Facebook

    The 23-year old man, wanted on forgery charges, was arrested after he “liked” the local his wanted poster on the Cascade County Crimestoppers Facebook page. Reardon was one of the most wanted local criminals, having been accused of stealing a wallet and cashing forged cheques. Police, who had been stumped in their efforts to find him, turned to social media to enlist the public’s help. They were perhaps slightly surprised to find a “like” posting from Levi Charles Reardon.     New plastic £5 notes in Scotland are being snapped up for £100 each by foreign and English collectors on internet auction sites. Two million of the Clydesdale Bank polymer notes will enter circulation over the next few months after the launch on March 23. Crucially, the non-paper notes – which are waterproof and crumple-free – can only be issued over the counter in Scotland. Auctioneer Gavin Tavendale, of Edinburgh firm Thomson Roddick, says banknotes regularly sell for much more than their face value, reports the Daily Record.
