Shops and supermarkets underwater in UK as strong storms in September

After Britain basked in its hottest September day in 105 years parts of the UK saw the summer come to a dramatic end with flooding and lightning strikes. Storms and heavy rain swept across the north of England, the Midlands and the South West bringing travel chaos and leaving some streets and shops submerged. Some Birmingham-bound flights were diverted and while power blackouts in the city also saw Metro services cancelled. Meanwhile, Manchester City's Champions League game against Borussia Mönchengladbach was postponed because of torrential rain in the area. In nearby Ashton-under-Lyne, the aisles of an ASDA supermarket were filmed under inches of water as the store was evacuated. Megan Beland posted a Facebook video of 'rain' falling inside the Tesco Extra in Pool near R...

Post-Brexit European Union needs joint military headquarters

The proposals, echoing a plan put forward this week by France and Germany, are part of a broader attempt to rally EU nations after Britain's vote to leave the bloc. The European Union’s chief executive called on Wednesday for a joint command headquarters for EU military missions and greater defence cooperation, reviving long-running efforts to reduce reliance on the United States. In his annual speech to the European Parliament, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said no single EU government had a military big enough to deal with security challenges on Europe’s doorstep, from Islamic militants to a more hostile Russia. The proposals, echoing a plan put forward this week by France and Germany, are part of a broader attempt to rally EU nations after Britain’s ...

Trump’s daughter Ivanka throw down Hillary Clinton

Ivanka Trump took aim at Hillary Clinton today in an interview on ABC's Good Morning America for, in her view, taking no action on paid family leave to help parents during her decades-long political career. Discussing her father's recently unveiled proposals on child care and maternity leave, Ivanka Trump called it a very comprehensive plan that's long overdue. Respectfully, Hillary Clinton has been around for decades and there's no policy benefiting either mothers or fathers in terms of paid leave, she said this morning. We have not been in public office for the last several decades and she has. So she could have instituted some of those policies in that role and has not done so. Donald Trump's eldest daughter stood by his side as he formally rolled out his child care and...

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump no friend of working class

Obama's campaign appearance was his first as a solo act on behalf of Clinton as he tries to ensure Democrats retain control of the White House once his eight years are over in January. With Hillary Clinton sidelined by pneumonia, President Barack Obama took up the Democrats fight against Donald Trump on Tuesday, trying to quash the Republican presidential candidate’s bid to appeal to working-class voters. Obama, whose 50 percent job approval rating could help improve the climate for the Democratic ticket in the Nov. 8 election, rallied party faithful against Trump, the 70-year-old New York real estate developer, at an outdoor event in Philadelphia. This is a guy who spent 70 years on this earth showing no concern for working people. He spent most of his life trying to stay...

UK cyber attack: spies are planning for a major hostile

Ambitious new plans are being drawn up by GCHQ to create a Great British Firewall to block malicious websites countrywide and combat a doubling of serious cyber attacks threatening national security over the past year. Though still in its infancy, the scheme is intended to be a flagship project for the new National Cyber Security Centre a public-facing arm of GCHQ which will open next month to better co-ordinate the UK’s digital defence efforts. The NCSC plan envisions private-sector internet service providers, such as BT, Sky or Virgin Media, voluntarily complying with its proposals, circumventing any need for legislation. Consumers will be able to opt out of the censorship should they wish in order to allay concerns over civil liberties. Malicious websites which automati...

UN Awaits for Security Assurances to supplies Aid to Aleppo

The UN said aid would not go through today as planned, even as trucks packed with food sat at the Turkish border ready to cross into Syria, and residents of the besieged city of Aleppo awaited the badly-needed supplies. The UN had planned for 20 trucks with aid to enter East Aleppo today, the second day the U.S.-Russia brokered ceasefire largely held, but some armed groups are opposing that plan and the UN is still waiting for all security requirements to be in place, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. We have to get everyone in agreement to make this action happen, David Swanson, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told ABC News Some parties to the conflict are not fully on board. Swanson did not ...
