Isis fighter reveals group’s plan to spread even after defeat in Iraq and Syria

Isis will flourish and survive even if it is defeated in the present battle for Syria and Iraq an Isis militant has told The Independent. In an exclusive interview, Faraj, a 30-year-old veteran fighter from north east Syria, says that when we say that the Islamic State Isis is everlasting and expanding, it is not a mere poetic or propaganda phrase. He says the group intends to rebuild its strength in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, adding that Isis has sleeper agents all over the world and their numbers are increasing. In his account of his life in Isis, Faraj makes plain that only a year after the caliphate was declared in the wake of the capture of Mosul in 2014, its leaders could foresee that it might be overrun militarily. He reveals hitherto unknown details of...

Iran Begins Construction Second Nuclear Power Plant

Iran began building its second nuclear power plant with Russian help on Saturday, the first such project since last year's landmark nuclear deal with world powers, state TV reported. The project will eventually include two power plants expected to go online in 10 years. Construction on the second plant is set to begin in 2018. The project will cost more than $8.5 billion and produce 1,057 megawatts of electricity. Construction of the power plant is a symbol of Iran enjoying the results of the nuclear deal, Senior Vice-President Ishaq Jahangiri said at a ceremony marking the start of the project. We will continue working with Russia as a strategic partner and friend, he added. The ceremony was held in the southern port city of Bushehr, where Iran's sole operational nuclear ...

The persistent post lunch lethargy

Sitting at your desk at work and struggling to concentrate after lunch? You are not alone; it happens to the best of us. Welcome to ‘food coma’, that common sleepy, lethargic feeling after a meal that is also referred to as ‘carb coma’ or ‘postprandial somnolence’. As the name suggests ‘postprandial’ refers to the meal and ‘somnolence’ to the strong desire for sleep. It may be accompanied by extreme fullness, bloating, mental fogginess, difficulty in concentration and reduced attention span. While this sleepiness may not be confined to the middle of the day, studies report that it occurs predominantly after lunch. A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology, published in 1998, reported that the extent of postprandial somnolence was at its extent after meals eaten between ...

European Investment Bank tough about after Brexit

Britain’s exit from the European Union will create difficulties for the European Investment Bank (EIB), a lender owned by EU governments, the bank’s president Werner Hoyer said on Saturday. The EIB is also a central tool for an investment programme the European Commission estimated would generate 315 billion euros ($354 billion) of investment in the EU and which is set to be expanded. When asked what will happen to the EIB when Britain, which is one of its major shareholders, leaves the EU, Hoyer told reporters in Bratislava: The United Kingdom is a big and important shareholder of the European Investment Bank and an important member state of the European Union. This is why it will be a difficult process, Hoyer said on entering a meeting of EU finance ministers. We will ha...

USA and Russia deal for Syria on cease fire

The United States and Russia agreed here Friday to the renewal of a cease-fire in Syria, to begin Monday with the cessation of all air and ground attacks by all parties, including the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. If the truce holds for seven consecutive days and humanitarian aid begins to flow unimpeded to besieged areas, Secretary of State John F. Kerry said the United States and Russia will then establish a Joint Implementation Center to coordinate their intelligence and air attacks against agreed terrorist targets in Syria. A bedrock of the agreement, Kerry said, is Russia’s ensuring that Assad’s air force will no longer fly combat missions over opposition and civilian areas. This step is absolutely essential, Kerry said. By all accounts, Assad air at...
