The chronic condition that could be the reason you can’t lose weight

The chronic condition that could be the reason you can't lose weight Imagine spending years trying to lose weight from the lower half of your body, but finding that no diet or exercise regime ever changed your shape. That is the reality for people who have lipoedema, which may affect as many as 11% of women to some degree. And, according to experts in the condition, many doctors don't even know it exists. Lipoedema is a chronic condition that causes an abnormal build-up of fat cells in certain areas typically the thighs, lower legs and bum, although it can occur on the arms as well. Men can develop lipoedema, but the majority of cases affect women (the limited research conducted so far shows that it is linked to female hormones) – and because it's still poorly understood, ...

Send your intimate images to Facebook to stop revenge porn

Facebook is testing a new method to stop revenge porn that requires you to send your own nudes to yourself via the social network’s Messenger app. This strategy would help Facebook to create a digital fingerprint for the picture and mark it as non-consensual explicit media. So if a relationship goes sour, you could take proactive steps to prevent any intimate images in possession of your former love interest from being shared widely on Facebook or instagram. Facebook is partnering with a Australian government agency to prevent such image-based abuses, the Australia Broadcasting Corp reported. If you’re worried your intimate photos will end up on Instagram or Facebook, you can get in contact with Australia’s e-Safety Commissioner. They might then tell you to send the images...

EU warns UK it has less than a month to make concessions

A document obtained by the Guardian reveals the EU’s groundwork and confirms that it will be impossible for the UK to get a finished trade deal by March 2019. The British government has less than a month to make a concession on the Brexit bill in order to guarantee launching trade talks in December, the Guardian understands. Senior officials in Brussels say talks have stalled since Theresa May’s Florence speech and warn the EU will find it difficult to agree to trade talks at a December summit unless the prime minister offers more on the Brexit divorce settlement. There remains a lot to do on financial obligations, Italy’s Europe minister Sandro Gozi said on Tuesday, after meeting the Brexit secretary, David Davis, in Rome. Surgical masks and robotic operations are a needless waste of NHS money

Useless surgical masks and robots could be scrapped to help save NHS £150 million a year, Imperial College has said, after identifying changes the health service can make to save more than £150 million each year. Researchers from the Department of Surgery and Cancer, found 71 commonly performed procedures or practices that are of high cost but low value to patients, which could be stopped. They include hernia repair operations for people with few symptoms, which currently cost the NHS £28 million a year, but do little to make people feel better. Likewise using CT scans to diagnose appendicitis was found to have little benefit above and beyond the traditional blood tests and hands-on pressure checks by doctors. Scrapping them could save the health service four million pound...

The council will implement the increase and continue to increase pay levels for the lowest paid staff to ensure that they are paid the nearest scale point above the London Living Wage. A report by Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) shows that there are 69 Living Wage employers in Tower Hamlets, ranking the borough 7th in the capital. Supporting Living Wage Week the Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs said: "I'm proud of the fact Tower Hamlets is an accredited London Living Wage Council, so we pay at least the London Living Wage to our staff. It's only fair that ...
