Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump met the Queen for tea at Windsor Castle as tens of thousands of people protested his visit to the UK on the streets of London.
The US president and his wife were treated to a Guard of Honour as they arrived at the royal residence on Friday afternoon after keeping the monarch waiting for several minutes.
The US President did not bow as he shook hands briefly with the Queen on the dais, and the First Lady did not curtsy as she shook the head of state’s white gloved hand.
She smiled as shook hands with the president and Mrs Trump before they stood in a line for the US national anthem The Star Spangled Banner.
Mr Trump was then invited to inspect the guard of honour in their red suits and bear skins.
She hosted tea for Mr Trump and his wife in the castle’s Oak Room, where in 2016 she hosted tea for the then US President Barack Obama and Michelle.
His meeting with the Queen came as up to 250,000 people marched on the streets of central London to protest his visit to the UK.
The President earlier met with Theresa May at Chequers for talks on trade, Brexit and Nato.
The president savaged Mr May’s Brexit proposals and warned they would likely kill off any chance of a future trade deal with the US in a bombshell interview. At the press conference, Mr Trump described the interview as fake news.
David Lammy MP said that after his “racist” criticism of Mr Khan, Mr Trump does not deserve a royal reception.
The real reason Trump blames my friend @SadiqKhan for the terror attacks last year is simple. He hates that London chose a Muslim mayor, wrote Mr Lammy.
Labour’s Emily Thornberry also spoke out against the President’s treatment of Mrs May, saying: Donald Trump ought to have listened to his mother… I am assuming that his mum told him that when you go to someone’s house you do not insult the host.
Conservative MP Sarah Wollaston meanwhile said Mr Trump was determined to insult the Prime Minister, adding: The divisive, dog-whistle rhetoric in his @TheSun interview is repulsive. If signing up to the #Trump world view is the price of a deal, it’s not worth paying.
He wrote on Twitter: Trump takes a wrecking ball to British Sovereignty and is cheered to the rafters by The Sun. Sad day.
The man is a racist, sexist, cruel, awful, ignorant narcissist. I’m with the protestors. In the same controversial Sun interview, Mr Trump spoke of his admiration for the Queen, calling her a tremendous woman.
He told the paper: If you think of it, for so many years she has represented her country, she has really never made a mistake. You don’t see, like, anything embarrassing. She is just an incredible woman.
The Queen has met 11 of the 12 sitting US presidents during her reign; Lyndon Johnson, who never came to the UK while in office, was the only exception.
