OAP woman killed by police dog

Irene Collins, 73, was attacked by the canine as it searched her house in Middlesbrough for a suspected drug dealer in July 2014. The dog, called Dano, then returned to bite Mrs Collins for a second time after it had been dragged off her by its handler, as the pensioner screamed why has this happened to me?. A jury at the inquest at Teesside Magistrates' Court heard Mrs Collins, who had lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, died four days after being bitten on the arms and legs by the dog. On arriving at her home, her son Eric told a police officer that the incident would finish her off. A Home Office pathologist initially reported that she had died of her injuries, despite her other medical issues. Sergeant Neil Yates explained the situation to ...

Syria shot down Russia spy plane

A Russian military jet is believed to have been inadvertetly shot down in Syria. The Russian Defence Ministry says it lost contact with an IL-20 turbo-prop plane, which had 14 people on board, near Khmeimim Airbase in Syria. The jet disappeared off radar around the same time that Israeli and French forces were mounting aerial attacks on targets in Syria. The aircraft is believed to have been accidentally shot down by Syrian defences while firing at incoming Israeli missiles. A US government official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said it believed the plane, used for electronic reconnaissance, was downed by anti-aircraft artillery. Around the time the plane disappeared, the Syrian coastal city of Latakia near a Russian airbase to which the IL-20 w...

Emergency plans drafted to prepare for Corbyn’s sudden resignation

A proposed change to the party rulebook circulated to senior figures includes a key new curb on any acting leader, forcing them to subject all of their actions to the prior approval of the ruling National Executive Committee (NEC). When a Labour leader steps aside, the deputy leader automatically becomes ‘acting leader’ in their place while a new election is arranged. However, the leadership election can take many months and supporters of Corbyn are determined that the party should stick with his political direction should he have to step aside for any reason. The proposed rule change drafted by senior allies of the leader would add a brand new clause to the Labour constitution, effectively putting the NEC in charge of the party rather than Watson. It aims to set ...

France and UK agree new deal to end scallop wars

British vessels under 15 metres will continue to be able to take scallops from the waters but larger boats will stop fishing in the Baie de Seine from midnight on Monday until the end of 30 October, DEFRA confirmed. The more than a decade-long disagreement came to a head in the early hours of 28 August as French fishermen allegedly threw smoke bombs, rocks and other projectiles at English and Scottish boats in the scallop-rich bay off the Normandy coast. French fishermen accused the British of depleting stocks and wanted them to face the same rules which mean all French boats are banned from fishing for the molluscs during the summer to conserve stocks. Nearly three weeks later, the neighbouring countries have come to an agreement, despite UK industry leaders walki...
