MPs to call for sugar tax and tighter controls on junk food ads

MPs want a sugar tax on soft drinks and a restriction on TV junk food adverts to fight childhood obesity. The Commons Health Committee said there must be “broader and deeper controls on advertising and marketing to children”. It said: “A way would be to restrict all advertising of high fat, salt and sugar foods and drinks to after the 9pm watershed.” And it also demands a clamp on deals for unhealthy foods and a ban on sweets at the end of aisles and by check-outs. Fizzy drinks should state how many spoons of sugar they contain while use of cartoon characters and stars in children’s advertising “should be restricted.” MPs also want new guidelines on what constitutes a healthy school packed lunch. Tory MP Dr Sarah Wollaston, who chairs the committee, urged action. She said:...

Can the Mayor Anisul resovled it and kill the dragon

Mayor Annisul Huq had his first bitter taste of what lies ahead if he really wants to go about his promises with sincerity. His mission virtually failed when he went to supervise the clearing of the Tejgaon road where trucks are parked illegally, blocking the important connecting pathway. It also proved a lot of things – how rowdy and ill-disciplined our transport sector is, how political patronage can lead to creation of monsters, how weak our institutions have become because of politicization, how helpless the Dhaka city dwellers are and lot more. Annisul, who seems to be more energetic than any other mayors that we had, who sounds more affirmative and who seems to really want a change in Dhaka, looked overwhelmed by the muscle power of the transport workers. In the end ...

European Council President Donald Tusk, right, puts his arm on the shoulder of Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu after a media conference at an EU-Turkey summit in Brussels. The European Union and Turkey agreed on a deal to stem the migrant crisis, including a three-billion-euro ($3.2-billion) aid package for Syrian refugees in Turkey, EU president Donald Tusk said after a summit in Brussels on Sunday. "Our agreement sets out a clear plan for the timely re-establishment of order at our shared frontier. We will also step up our assistance to Syrian refugees in Turkey through a new refugee facility of three billion euros," Tusk told a press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. The EU also agreed to open a new chapter in Turkey's stalled bid for member...

Isis poster girl was chained to a radiator by her mother to stop her joining jihadists in Syria

A mother has told of her despair at watching her daughter turn into an Islamic extremist, saying she even chained her to the radiator in their home to stop her fleeing to join Isis in Syria. Shakhla Bochkaryova, 41, from a small town near Surgut in Russia, told The Siberian Times how she had come to accept that she gave birth to a “monster” after her 20-year-old daughter, Fatima Dzhafarova, became radicalised and ran away. An intelligent girl who always took pride in her appearance, Fatima had just started studying at university when her Ms Bochkaryova – who comes from a Muslim family – noticed her changing. Three months into her studies, she stopped speaking to her mother, started covering her head and looked unwell and, in December 2013, Fatima told her mother that she w...

Saudi women candidates begin 1st election campaign

Saudi women running for public office next month for the first time ever begin campaigning Sunday in another step forward for women's rights in the conservative kingdom's slow democratic pro-cess. Around 900 women are standing in the December 12 municipal elections, which will also be the first time females have been allowed to participate in choosing officials. "This is one of the first steps for women's rights, a big step for us," said Sahar Hassan Nasief, an activist in the Red Sea city of Jeddah who has many friends running for office. The election will be the third municipal ballot for men, who previously voted in 2005 and 2011. The absolute monarchy, which applies a strict interpretation of Islam, has no female cabinet ministers and is the only country in the world w...

Jeremy Corbyn warns rebels: I’m not going anywhere over Syria

Jeremy Corbyn has warned plotters against his leadership that he is “not going anywhere” over his opposition to bombing Syria, as he urged MPs to listen to Labour members. The Labour leader is facing a rebellion among shadow cabinet ministers, with the shadow foreign secretary, Hilary Benn, and the deputy leader, Tom Watson, among those in favour of extending airstrikes against Isis. However, Corbyn asserted his authority on Sunday by reminding MPs of his large mandate and making clear that he alone would decide whether to whip them to vote against extending airstrikes on Isis. He has also consulted members about their views on whether David Cameron has made the case for bombing the Isis stronghold of Raqqa and received 70,000 responses through an online form. Speaking to ...

UK could be prosecuted for war crimes over missiles sold to Saudi Arabia that were used to kill civilians in Yemen

Britain is at risk of being prosecuted for war crimes because of growing evidence that missiles sold to Saudi Arabia have been used against civilian targets in Yemen’s brutal civil war, Foreign Office lawyers and diplomats have warned. Advisers to Philip Hammond, the Foreign Secretary, have stepped up legal warnings that the sale of specialist missiles to the Saudis, deployed throughout nine months of almost daily bombing raids in west Yemen against Houthi rebels, may breach international humanitarian law. Since March this year, bombing raids and a blockade of ports imposed by the Saudi-led coalition of Sunni Gulf states have crippled much of Yemen. Although the political aim is to dislodge Houthi Shia rebels and restore the exiled President, Abed-Rabbo Mansour Hadi, thous...

Cyber crimes: Govt to write to Facebook for deal

The government will write a letter to Facebook authorities tomorrow to strike a deal with it to be able to get in-formation about its users to ensure cyber security in Bangladesh. “I will write the letter as per our plan to strike the deal with Facebook,” Tarana Halim, state minister for posts and telecommunications, told reporters at The Daily Star centre today. The government is taking the initiative as the country becomes vulnerable to cyber attacks, especially through the use of Facebook, ministry sources said. Facebook showed their interest to sign the deal with Bangladesh government in 2006 on the condition that the networking site will not take responsibility for the users' posts. Tarana on November 17 informed reporters that the ruling Awami League-led government i...

The mystery of the £2m found in a safe which nobody wants to claim

Mayfair’s status as the most valuable property on the Monopoly board is well deserved. Its red-brick townhouses, apartment buildings and private casinos are among the world’s most exclusive. But the central London district also has its seedier side. The lanes and alleyways around Shepherd Market host a plethora of private detective agencies and tax firms catering for the billionaire international local traffic. Not to mention a fair sprinkling of brothels. For many years, also catering for the wealthy set, in a tall office building on nearby Park Street was a business housing safe deposit boxes. Here, in return for a copy of your passport and £1,500 a year, you could hire a lockable 72cm square box, no questions asked, to store whatever took your fancy. In the boom times b...
