Police chief defends using rapist as informant

A police chief who took the controversial decision to use a child rapist as an informant against a grooming gang says he has received hundreds and hundreds of supportive messages from the public. Northumbria Police's decision to pay the unnamed convict almost £10,000 had made headlines when the details emerged last month. But after all but one member of the grooming gang was sentenced for their roles in recruiting vulnerable young women, giving them drugs and then persuading or forcing them into sex, Chief Constable Steve Ashman described the outpouring of public support for his force's decisions. Carolann Gallon Mr Ashman said: When reflecting upon the morality of the decision, I think it's important to take account of public opinion. If the moral compass was spinning whe...

FBI probing Utah cop who arrested nurse for refusing to draw blood

The FBI said on Friday it is examining whether federal laws were violated by a Utah police detective who is shown on video assaulting and arresting a nurse after she refused to allow taking a blood sample from an unconscious patient. The July 26 incident involving Salt Lake City police Detective Jeff Payne is already being investigated by state authorities, who requested the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigations on Thursday. Sandra Yi Barker, a spokeswoman at the FBI's Salt Lake City field office, said agents already opened a review of the matter after videos of Payne forcefully arresting University of Utah Hospital nurse Alex Wubbels emerged last week. We are there to support and assist them as needed, but we also have our own review going on at the same time, Bark...

Still time to have your say

Local people have two weeks left to share their views on proposed changes to several council services. Four consultations were launched last month, following the 'Your Borough, Your Future' survey which ran last Autumn. After getting initial feedback then, the council agreed a three year budget in February, which set out how it planned to make £58m of savings. And now it is seeking local people's views on more detailed proposals, with two weeks left until the consultations close. Mayor John Biggs said: "Government cuts and pressures on services mean we have had to save £58m, from our budget by 2020 – the equivalent of £1 in every £6 we spend. "We are making significant internal changes to how the council works to achieve these savings and listened to people's views about the services they ...

Russia Is Preparing for a Massive War: Ukrainian President

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko claimed Thursday that the upcoming Russian military drill in Belarus shows Moscow is preparing its forces for a much bigger conflict. The comments came during his annual address to parliament. Russia’s backing of separatists in the eastern region of Ukraine and its annexation of Crimea show no sign of being reversed, Poroshenko added according to Ukrainian news site Ukrainska Pravda. On the contrary, Ukraine thinks the Kremlin’s military ambitions are only going to grow. There are no signs at the moment that Moscow would be ready to pull back from Donbas or leave Crimea, Poroshenko said. In fact, there is more and more evidence for its preparations for an offensive war of continental proportions. Trending: Trump Sends DACA Tweet After R...

This Pen Can Diagnose Cancer in 10 Seconds

The MasSpec Pen is a real-time diagnostic tool created by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin. In a new study published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine, the researchers report that their handheld device (which is not yet FDA-approved) uses tiny droplets of water to analyze human tissue samples for cancer with 96% accuracy. It’s a gentle, simple chemical process, says study author Livia Schiavinato Eberlin, an assistant professor of chemistry at UT Austin. It’s highly specific and highly sensitive. The fact that it’s non-destructive brings a new approach to cancer diagnosis. Getting rid of all cancerous tissue while also preventing any harm to healthy tissue is a delicate process. When operating on a woman with breast cancer, for example...

Trump’s betrayal of the Republican leaders: Should surprise no one

President Trump meets with Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress. Chuck and Nancy and Donald and Ivanka seemed to thoroughly enjoy their meeting at the White House the other day. Mitch and Paul, not so much. Does it really surprise anyone that President Trump betrayed the Republican leaders who have been trying their best to carry water for him on Capitol Hill Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) and is playing footsie with their Democratic rivals? It shouldn’t. One thing that should be blindingly obvious by now is that political loyalty, for the president, is a one-way street. Yes, McConnell and Ryan embarrassed themselves and squandered precious political capital in a long, fruitless attempt to repeal and replace ...
