Royals job could cost taxpayer £1m

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's security bill to move to Africa could reach £1 million a year, it is claimed. Harry’s advisers are reportedly working to create a role that capitalises on the couple's 'rock star' status, that could see the pair move to the continent for up to three years. But such a move would require a dedicated team of Metropolitan Police Royal protection officers each to accompany them, The Sun reports. Their as-yet unborn baby would also be entitled to its own security, the paper adds. These security details could come with a hefty price tag, met by the British tax payer. A security consultant estimates that could be in the region of £750,000 a year, according to The Sun, with a further £250,000 to cover travel, medical and insurance costs for...

How EU polls are dividing the European parliament over Brexit

EU unity has been one of the great surprises of Brexit: the bloc’s 27 remaining member states have managed to hold a united front in public in a way the UK a single country could only dream of. But with the UK’s departure delayed until October crucially, after the EU elections – that unity is being tested as never before, and the results are surfacing in the European parliament itself. Guy Verhofstadt, long adored by British Remainers for mocking Brexiteers and championing citizens’ rights, surprised a few of those campaigners when he stood up in the European parliament on Wednesday. “The only thing that can save us is Nigel Farage,” the EU federalist said – prompting applause from the arch Eurosceptic himself and nervous glances from the Lib Dem MEP sitting behind...

Why Putin might worry about Ukraine’s president-elect

A landslide victory on the scale of Ukraine's president-elect, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, is the kind of electoral result you might expect from his larger, autocratic neighbour to the east. But there are no question marks over the legitimacy of this vote or the strength of the democratic mandate it gives Ukraine's new leader. This was a cry from the gut of the Ukrainian people that they are fed up with what's gone before. It is as much an expression of rage as it is an endorsement. Between media appearances at campaign HQ, Mr Zelenskiy recorded a video message for distribution on social media. His Facebook and Insta-driven campaign looks set to continue in his presidency. He is promising to listen. His message is power to the people, direct democracy. A populist messag...

What’s in store for Meghan and Harry after royal baby

Like any parents-to-be, Prince Harry and Meghan are busy preparing for their life-changing new arrival. Those sleepless nights will be taking place in Frogmore Cottage, newly renovated for a reported £3million, in the grounds of Windsor Castle where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were married last year. UK porn block won’t stop teens accessing X rated content

The UK's porn regulator has admitted that under-18's will be able to get around the government's forthcoming age-verification measures. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), which has been tasked with policing pornography websites, acknowledged that virtual private networks (VPNs) will allow users to evade the checks. VPNs work by routing the web user's connection through a foreign server, making it seem as if they are accessing the site from another country. Age-verification is not a silver bullet, the BBFC said in a statement on its website . Some determined teenagers will find ways to access pornography. However, children will no longer stumble across pornography on commercial pornographic websites. Research carried out on behalf of the NSPCC and Of...

Brexit supporter jailed for sending MPs death threats

A Brexit supporter who sent death threats and racist messages to MPs has been jailed.
