Tips for combatting deadly pollen bomb due this week

Bad news for hay fever sufferers: this week (running into the long weekend) the UK will see high pollen counts across the board, with tree pollen causing chaos. And a national health charity has warned this poses a particular risk to people with asthma. A deadly pollen bomb is due to hit this week, according to Sonia Munde at Asthma UK. This puts people with asthma at risk of a potentially life-threatening asthma attack, she told HuffPost UK. Birch, ash, willow and oak pollen will be airborne across the UK between now and the weekend, according to the Met Office’s pollen forecast. Around 3.3 million people with asthma are affected pollen, continued Munde, which can cause symptoms such as wheezing, a tight chest or coughing. She advised people with asthma to take t...

Tories facing EU election wipe-out

The Commons will get a new vote on a customs union in a few weeks in order to try to break the Brexit deadlock, amid warnings that Theresa May’s Conservatives are walking into a wipe-out in the European elections. Veteran MP Frank Field told the Standard that he plans to move a motion with the Father of the House, Kenneth Clarke, to show that a smooth trading bloc is a solution that commands cross-party support. Mr Field said a backbencher-led move would also get Mrs May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn off the hook of having to sign a formal compromise deal that could trigger civil war in their parties. I think if it comes from the backbenches, neither of the party leaders can be accused of dividing their parties. I would be confident of getting it through, he said...

Al-Aqsa Mosque: Firefighters tackle blaze in Jerusalem (video)

The Al Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site in the world for Muslims, was ablaze at the same time as an inferno gripped the Notre Dame cathedral. The fire, in Jerusalem’s old town, broke out on the same tragic night one of Europe’s most famous Christian sites also burned in France. Footage of the incident shows smoke filling the street as bright flame flicker and people cry out in surprise. Fortunately, the fire did not cause major damage to the iconic structure, but it did endanger a part that is over 2,000 years old. https://twitter.com/i/status/1117882603116421120 Initial reports suggested the incident was caused by an electrical fault but others claim playing children could be responsible. The blaze was contained to Marwani Prayer Room, also known as Solo...

Harry and Meghan reference Baby Sussex for first time

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have delighted fan with a cute comment about their Royal Baby in their latest Instagram post. While thanking generous well-wishers for charity donations, the message referred to the Duke and Duchess - and Baby Sussex. Thousands of pounds have been raised for charities close to the couple's hearts as part of an unofficial baby shower and in lieu of gifts to the Royal Baby in the last few weeks. The message says: Whether a $5 donation, £1000 contribution, offering to volunteer, or spreading the word you’ve played your part. And on behalf of The Duke and Duchess (and Baby Sussex), we thank you so much. One fan wrote: Using their platform for good and making the world a better place despite all the negatives. A worthy and awesome goal. ...

I dream Brexit can be stopped, EU’s Tusk admits

The president of the European Council has warned opponents of Brexit not to give in to fatalism and accept Britain’s departure from the European Union. Speaking in the European Parliament on Tuesday Donald Tusk said Europe and Britain needed dreams and dreamers to keep the idea of a united Europe alive and Britain in the EU. During the European Council one of the leaders warned us not to be dreamers and that we shouldn’t think that Brexit can be reversed, Mr Tusk told MEPs in Strasbourg. I didn’t respond at the time. But today in front of you I would like to say at this rather difficult moment in our history, that we need the dreamers and dreams. We cannot give into fatalism. At least, I will not stop dreaming about a better and united Europe. Mr Tusk says he acce...

Notre Dame’s treasures what was lost and saved

The fire that destroyed two-thirds of the roof of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris on Monday did more than damage a beloved historic landmark: It also endangered the vast collection of Christian relics and artwork housed both within the building and on its grounds. One of the cathedral’s most precious treasures a relic of the crown of thorns believed to have been worn by Jesus Christ at the time of his crucifixion was saved from the flames, according to the rector of the cathedral, Msgr. Patrick Chauvet. But the condition of many of its other treasures including sculptures, paintings, stained glass windows and liturgical art and relics remained unclear, Monsignor Chauvet said. He said the main threats to the artwork were fire, smoke damage and falling material l...

Westminster’s Game of Thrones battle to replace May begins

The battle to replace Theresa May intensified today with a warning that the Conservatives are doomed unless they choose a new leader who can appeal to Metropolitan Britain. A string of current and former Cabinet ministers paraded their credentials as potential successors to the Prime Minister as she left Westminster for a walking holiday in Wales. Sajid Javid, Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson clashed with speeches and interviews setting out their core values. Former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab bet on his ability to overtake the frontrunners, referencing Game Of Thrones in a tweet. I’m not alone in backing Arya, he said. It’s never the favourite. But the first solid endorsement of the day was for another dark horse cantering up from the back, as Health Secretary Mat...

IS bride Begum granted legal aid

Jihadi bride Shamima Begum has been granted legal aid to fight the decision to remove her citizenship, the Mail can reveal today. In a decision blasted as disgusting’ and ridiculous by MPs, lawyers have successfully asked for taxpayers cash on her behalf, arguing that Home Secretary Sajid Javid’s decision was unfair on the 19-year-old Islamic State acolyte. It means taxpayers face a legal bill which could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds to fund the former London schoolgirl’s fight to come back to the UK. She is currently in a refugee camp in Syria. Last night there was fury at the decision by the Legal Aid Agency (LAA), which emerged on the day it was alleged that Begum had stitched suicide bombers into explosive vests. It was also claimed she carried a Ka...

IS bride was active in ‘morality police

Shamima Begum was a member of the Isis morality police, a feared group which enforced the terror organisation’s strict interpretation of Islamic law, according to reports. The 19-year-old British citizen, who fled her home in Bethnal Green four years ago with two other schoolgirls, has claimed that she was only a “housewife” during her time living with the group in Syria. But according to a report in The Sunday Telegraph she played a much more active role in the organisation’s reign of terror as a member of the hisba which metes out punishment to those found flouting Isis laws on how to dress and behave. One activist quoted by the newspaper said Begum had been seen holding an automatic weapon and shouting at Syrian women in the city of Raqqa for wearing brigh...

Four arrested in terror probe after arriving UK

They touched down at Luton Airport on Wednesday night and were later taken into custody, with detectives continuing to question them at a police station in Bedfordshire. Scotland Yard said the suspects, all Sri Lankan nationals, had been detained under the terrorism act. Police at the airport were made aware of the men the next day, Thursday 11 April and subsequently stopped them under schedule seven of the Terrorism Act 2000, confirmed a police spokesman. None of the men have been identified as they have not been charged. Inquiries are ongoing.
