Calls by Mps to extradite Assange

Around 70 MPs have signed a letter urging the government to make sure that Julian Assange faces Swedish authorities, if the country requests his extradition. Labour MP Stella Creasy shared the letter on Twitter, which has been sent to Home Secretary Sajid Javid. The letter says: "We are writing to request that you do everything you can to champion action that will ensure Julian Assange can be extradited to Sweden in the event Sweden make an extradition request. This would be so the formal investigation into an allegation of rape can be concluded and, if appropriate, a charge can be made and any trial can take place. We do not presume guilt, of course, but we believe due process should be followed and the complainant should see justice be done. We urge you to stan...

Assange rape case may be reopened

Prosecutors in Sweden are considering reopening an investigation into sexual assault allegations against Australian WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who was arrested in London’s Ecuadorian Embassy after a seven-year standoff and faces an extradition battle to the United States on a charge of conspiring to reveal government secrets. Sweden's Deputy Chief Prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson said in a statement that her office had received a request late Thursday to resume a rape probe into Assange from lawyers representing the alleged victim. The case was dropped in 2017 because Assange's residency in the Ecuadorian Embassy stymied the investigation. Assange has always denied the rape allegation. Separate allegations of sexual assault by Assange, made by a second Swedish w...

Pro Brexit protesters block Aldi store

Five Brexit supporters blocked off access to an Aldi store demanding for the UK leaves the EU now. The group arrived to the store in Neston, Wirral, in cars and camper vans to block the road. Waving British flags and wrapping themselves in the Union Jack, the protesters shouted this is Brexit and we are here. Footage shows the men and women parked their vehicles directly across the busy road, used for trucks delivering goods to the depot. After the protesters were spotted, people took to social media to warn others of the roadblock, while some joked about the irony of their protest, reports the Liverpool Echo . One man wrote on Twitter: They have blocked the road to a German supermarket distribution centre because they 'don't want German they want Brexit.... with ...

What’s behind William & Harry’s household split

Shielded by trees inside the Queen’s historic Windsor estate, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are settling into their new home, Frogmore Cottage, ahead of the birth of their first child. Cottage may be too humble a name for a Grade II-listed house with a reported 10 bedrooms, gifted to them by the Queen and refurbished for around £3m. And, according to reports this week, now complete with a vegetable patch and floating yoga studio. The Frogmore is at least appropriate, given the preponderance of frogs at its nearby lake (a disgusted Queen Victoria once noted they made the grass look as if it were alive). This is Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s new base, 20-odd miles from their former Kensington Palace home and former neighbours, the Cambridges, as well ...

MPs are gradually moving towards cancelling Brexit

Theresa May will head to Brussels on Wednesday to request another delay to Brexit in order to prevent Britain crashing out of the EU without a deal. However, with no sign of an end to the political crisis in the UK, the threat of a no-deal Brexit is still on the table. Even senior members of May's government are starting to talk about cancelling Brexit by revoking Article 50. More than 6 million people have signed an official government petition calling for it to be revoked. Senior MPs say there would be a House of Commons majority for doing it in order to avoid no-deal. As Theresa May heads to Brussels to plead for another delay to Brexit, amid failing cross-party talks and continued parliamentary chaos, the idea of cancelling the United Kingdom's ...

Netanyahu, the divisive force of nature who refused to be beaten

In the end, the combined might of three former Israeli army chiefs proved no match for the political will of Benjamin Netanyahu. A divisive force of nature who commandeered the airwaves, took over the vegetable markets, monopolized social media and even called potential voters out of the sea at Netanya beach on election day, Netanyahu simply refused to be beaten. He had help. President Donald Trump gifted him the sensationally timed US recognition of Israeli sovereignty on the Golan Heights late last month, and the branding of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Force as a terror group this week. President Vladimir Putin pitched in with Russia’s return of the remains of Zachary Baumel, 37 years after the Brooklyn-born IDF tank commander’s death in the Lebanon War. ...

Bexit set for delay until end of year

Britain is likely to be offered a final long extension ending on 31 December after the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, failed to convince the the bloc’s capitals that Theresa May has a plan to break the Brexit impasse. A number of member states, most prominently France, along with Slovenia, Greece, Austria and Spain, remain sceptical about a lengthy extension, citing the risks to the EU of Britain behaving badly. Barnier implored EU ministers meeting in Luxembourg to keep the pressure on MPs to back the deal by supporting May’s request for a Brexit delay only up until 30 June, a leaked diplomatic note of the debate reveals. But, according to the note seen by the Guardian, there is instead growing support for the idea of a lengthy extension, with around nine ...

Is your credit score important

A credit score may not be the first thing that pops into many consumers minds when they are considering their financial future. For some people, it may not even be something they have ever looked into. Credit scores, however, can have a major impact on the prospect of borrowing to buy big-ticket items such as a car or a house. They may also matter for areas such as employment possibilities, as well as obtaining consumer goods such as a mobile phone. With that in mind, here’s why now could be the right time for all consumers to take a closer look at their credit score. What is a credit score? A credit score provides a snapshot of an individual’s risk level from the perspective of a lender. It focuses on past borrowings and whether a consumer represents a good credi...

PM clings on to hope of compromise deal as Brexit looms

Theresa May has said she agrees with the Labour Party on certain aspects of Brexit, but time is running out for the prime minister to reach a compromise deal ahead of a summit with European leaders this week. Mrs May has angered Tories by holding talks with Jeremy Corbyn, with Brexiteers including Boris Johnson concerned she will accept a customs union as the price for a deal with the leader of the Opposition. Mrs May has told European Union leaders she wants a delay to Brexit until 30 June at the latest, with the possibility of an early exit if she can get a deal through parliament. But Brussels is expected to demand a clear strategy from Mrs May at a meeting of EU leaders on Wednesday and could insist on a longer delay which would require the UK to participate in...

Alert service for food allergy sufferers launched

Scotland’s food watchdog has launched a new alert service for food allergy sufferers. Food Standards Scotland (FSS) wants people to sign up to the free scheme which will send out real time text alerts or an email if an issue is found with missing or incorrect food labelling regarding allergens. Users will be given the option to receive specific alerts about issues involving any of the 14 major allergens which are required to be mentioned on packaging when used as ingredients in food or drink in the UK, including peanuts, sesame seeds, gluten, milk, eggs and fish. FSS said there were 86 allergy alerts for food and drink products in Scotland in the year from April 1, 2018. Head of the FSS Scottish Food Crime and Incidents Unit, Ron McNaughton, said: Food allergies c...
