The Untold Story Behind Saudi Arabia’s 41-Year U.S. Debt Secret

It was July 1974. A steady predawn drizzle had given way to overcast skies when William Simon, newly appointed U.S. Treasury secretary, and his deputy, Gerry Parsky, stepped onto an 8 a.m. flight from Andrews Air Force Base. On board, the mood was tense. That year, the oil crisis had hit home. An embargo by OPEC’s Arab nations—payback for U.S. military aid to the Israelis during the Yom Kippur War—quadrupled oil prices. Inflation soared, the stock market crashed, and the U.S. economy was in a tailspin. Officially, Simon’s two-week trip was billed as a tour of economic diplomacy across Europe and the Middle East, full of the customary meet-and-greets and evening banquets. But the real mission, kept in strict confidence within President Richard Nixon’s inner circle, would ta...

Farage also called the Prime Minister 'Dishonest Dave' and said the Tory leader's integrity was being questioned. The possibility of migrant sex attacks on women will be the nuclear bomb of the EU referendum campaign, according to Ukip leader Nigel Farage. The Brexit campaigner raised concerns over safety for women as an issue for voters to consider. Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, he also called the Prime Minister Dishonest Dave and said the Conservative Party leader's integrity was being questioned. In a live ITV programme on Tuesday, Mr Farage will take questions from a studio audience to discuss the referendum. David Cameron will also appear. Mr Farage made headlines during the general election campaign last year when, during a TV debate, he claimed the cost of drugs...

Paris floods ease but alerts in France’s north

The rain-swollen River Seine in Paris receded after reaching its highest level in three decades as attention turned today to other areas of France where alert warnings have been issued. From a peak of 6.10 metres (20 feet) in the early hours of yesterday, the river began to subside, falling to 5.77 metres at 8:00am (0600 GMT), the environment ministry's Vigicrues flood watch website said. However, red alerts had been issued for the Seine-Maritime and Eure departments in the northern Normandy region but were lifted early today and they passed on to the next level of orange. Alerts have also been issued in 15 other regions, including Ile-de-France, where Paris is located, Lorraine in the northeast as well as parts of the country's central areas. The note will be 15% smaller and feature Winston Churchill , who replaces 19th Century prison reformer Elizabeth Fry. It can be wiped clean, is tear-resistant, it will last for about five years – compared with 18 months to two years for the current cotton paper version. Bangladesh I Love You

Reginald Massey: 37 years ago on February 18, Muhammad Ali, the “greatest heavyweight boxer ever,” came to Bangladesh along with his wife for a five-day visit. During the visit, wherever Ali went, he was greeted wholeheartedly by tens of thousands of fans. Ali was also awarded honorary citizenship of Bangladesh while the boxing stadium in Paltan was named after him. Since my early youth I have been fascinated by Bengal, its culture and its people. I read all about Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Henry Derozio, Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Tagore, Nazrul Islam, Jamini Roy and other amazingly creative people. No other region of South Asia had produced such a large number of artists and poets. In London, in the seventies, when I was chairman of Seven Stars Films I met a leading Bangladeshi businessman named ...

David Cameron accuses Leave campaign of writing cheques they know will bounce

David Cameron has attacked Michael Gove and Boris Johnson for writing cheques they know will bounce after they claimed an extra £100 million a week would be freed up for the NHS if Britain quits the European Union. Diverting the UK's contribution to EU coffers would give the straining health service a "cash transfusion", the Justice Secretary and former London mayor have claimed. But the economic impact of Brexit would mean there is less money to pump into health care, the Prime Minister insisted. Mr Cameron said: "The Leave campaign is writing cheques they know will bounce, 9/10 economists say there'll be a profound shock if we leave the EU. That means there will be less money - not more. It's also why so many doctors and nurses support remaining in the EU." Leave campaig...

Paris hit by continuous rains, flooding

Incredible, that’s all I can say, muttered Catherine, a publishing editor, as she stared dumbfounded at the river water that had swallowed up the busy road running along the banks of the Seine near her Paris apartment. Roads and picturesque cobbled walkways in the French capital have disappeared, submerged by a vast expanse of brown river water carrying an unusual assortment of debris including logs, big wooden planks and a metal sign from a boat-club in its angry, swirling current. The rain-swollen Seine, which has spilled over on to embankments in many places in Paris, peaked at 6.07 metres on Friday night, its highest level in more than 30 years. Rising water lapped at the tops of traffic lights and trees, road signs for speed cameras poked out above the water, and a ti...

Airbus reconfigure A380 seating plan to squeeze fifth seat in middle row

Economy class looks set to get even more cramped as Airbus reveals a new cabin layout that can shoehorn 11 people into one row – enough to start a football team. The new A380 configuration raises the grim prospect of a middle middle seat, which suddenly makes holidaying at home an attractive option. Airbus says the new 3-5-3 seating plan – which could be used instead of the current 3-4-3 arrangement – would help airlines squeeze 23 additional passengers into economy class. The changes are part of a broader shakeup inside the A380 which includes a new stair galley at the rear of the plane and tweaks to the layout in premium economy and business class. In all, says Airbus, the changes could make space for an additional 70 passengers. The A380 is currently the biggest passeng...
