Can’t fall asleep? Try this super simple trick

Some things in life are necessary, like food, water, and shelter. But, to be reasonably content human beings, we need a few more things. Human contact is good, alone time is great, but at the top of the list? Decent sleep. Personally, I am about 1/8 the person I'd like to be when I'm going on four hours of tossing and turning. I'm 1/8 as smart, 1/8 as capable, and about 1/100 as friendly. Good sleep is absolutely mandatory. But, falling asleep is one of those Chinese finger-trap tasks that I'd never been able to master. I'd lie awake thinking about how not asleep I was, look at the clock, turn over, and repeat. The longer I stayed awake worrying about it, the harder it became to actually fall asleep. Until I discovered a new method. Keep in mind, I'm taking liberties with ...

Disabled woman has benefits removed by DWP after trying to find work

A paraplegic woman has been penalised by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) after resigning from a part-time job she sought herself but was unable to continue due to ill health. The woman had her benefits stopped after she gave up working eight hours a week for a consultancy agency. The DWP allow disabled people to receive sickness benefits if they are employed fewer than 16 hours a week and earn less than £115.50 for it. Speaking to the Guardian under the pseudonym Sarah Jones, she said she received written permission from the DWP to start work. But by March, Ms Jones told the DWP she had to resign because the job was taking a toll on her health. A month later, the DWP fraud department accused her of working without permission. Ms Jones was asked to fill in a "per...

First glimpse of boy found alive after parents left him in bear infested woods as punishment

Laying on a stretcher surrounded by medics, this is one of the first images of the seven-year-old boy who was left by his parents in bear-infested woods as a punishment. Young Yamato Tanooka was discovered at a remote Japanese military base about 2.5 miles from where he vanished almost a week ago. He was dumped by the side of the road in Hokkaido, Japan by his parents who wanted to discipline him for throwing stones at cars. But after nearly a week's search, involving up to 130 police officers, the youngster was found alive and unharmed. In images captured shortly after the youngster was found, the boy can be seen being led away on a stretcher by medics as an emergency helicopter hovers overhead. Rescue officers who found the boy said his first words were: "I'm hungry." Th...

Inside the secret bedrooms where cabin crew put their feet up and take a rest

We've all wondered what flight attendants do when they're not pacing the aisle serving us drinks and food. And these images of cabin crews' own secret bedrooms show they too get the chance to grab forty winks onboard. These images show crews onboard some certain Boeing 777 and 787 planes get their very own beds. Some of these jets feature a secret staircase which leads crew to their own sleeping quarters. But while they might offer a chance to rest your head, the set of windowless bedrooms in a row leave some attendants saying they feel like they're in a coffin. Used for long haul flights, the staircase leads crew members upwards into sleeping quarters fitted with mattresses, pillows and curtains offering a small amount of privacy. The beds are even fitted with seat belts ...

PM Faces Sky News Test As Remain Loses Ground

David Cameron will make the case for remaining in the European Union tonight in the first major television event of the referendum campaign. The Prime Minister will be interviewed at length by Sky News' political editor Faisal Islam before Kay Burley invites questions from a studio audience which has been weighted to include inners, outers and the undecided. After a stronger start, the Remain campaign appears to have been losing ground in the opinion polls to Vote Leave as the Brexiteers have turned their focus towards immigration. For the first time, a telephone poll by ICM for The Guardian newspaper has suggested a 4% lead for Vote Leave (52%) over Stronger In (48%) once 'don't knows' are excluded. Syria conflict: Calls for air drops of humanitarian aid to besieged towns

France and the UK have called on the UN to begin air drops of humanitarian aid to besieged areas in Syria. Last month, the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) set a deadline of 1 June for the distribution of urgent humanitarian supplies. But only a small amount of aid was delivered on Wednesday and a convoy to the town of Darayya near Damascus did not carry food. The UN Security Council will meet on Friday to discuss the air drops.British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said the Syrian government had failed to deliver the widespread humanitarian access called for by the international community. "While air drops are complex, costly and risky, they are now the last resort to relieve human suffering across many besieged areas," he said.He called on Russia and Iran, whic...

Evidence grows of an end to the house price boom

House prices, estate agents for sale and to let. Signs of faltering demand in the housing market are prompting estate agents and analysts to suggest England’s house price boom may be ending. Paul Smith, chief executive of the Haart agency — which has more than 100 branches — said: “We believe the nation has now neared the limit in terms of price rises.” Inquiries declined in April at their second-highest rate since 2008, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors — a trend that Mike Prew, equity analyst at investment bank Jefferies, said “signals this slowdown could morph into a period of sustained house price deflation”. Drops in this Rics measure are strongly correlated with price falls about a year later, Mr Prew added. “The balance of surveyors expecting...
