Sun story about investigator who travelled to Paris without a passport is made up: Croatia’s interior minister claims

Parts of a story written by an investigator from The Sun who claimed to have travelled from Turkey to Paris without having to show his passport were made up, the Croatian Interior Ministry has said. In an article billed as "a damning exposure of Europe's lax borders", Emile Ghessen says he smuggled himself 2,000 miles in six days without showing his passport once. The story says the path he took was similar to the route used by some of those responsible for the terror attacks in Paris, and by many refugees. However, the Croatian Interior Ministry said it had proof parts of the story were made up - and published a scan of his passport that it said it made during border checks. The article said Mr Ghessen evaded border police by hiding in a toilet when his train was stopped ...

Finance officer stole from council to fund five star wedding

A London council worker has been jailed for embezzling nearly half a million pounds of public money to fund a grand wedding and honeymoon, as well as paying off her mortgage. Ceyda Elkatme, 34, of Waltham Forest, exploited her position as a finance officer for Haringey Council to make fraudulent payments to seven accomplices for adult care services that were never delivered. In total, she paid them more than £466,000, which they then transferred into Elkatme's or her husband's account, after taking a cut for themselves. "This was a despicable crime where Elkatme abused her position as a finance officer to defraud Haringey Council out of well over £450,000 of what was effectively public money," says Haringey Borough superintendent Amanda Dellar. "Working with her husband an...

Cairo restaurant firebomb attack kills 16

At least 16 people have been killed in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, after firebomb was thrown into a res-taurant, reports BBC. The attack happened in the Agouza area, in the city centre. The Cairo Post newspaper said three masked men threw the device into the venue before fleeing. Re-ports say the target also contained a nightclub. Reuters news agency quoted an unnamed security official as saying one of the suspects is a disgruntled ex-employee. The agency said the restaurant was in the basement of the building, making it harder for people to es-cape. The victims died from burns or the effects of inhaling smoke, it said. At least five other people were injured. Cairo has previously been rocked by a series of attacks on security forces and civilians carried out by suspected...

Man Blames Women’s Lib For Missed Train In Sexist Tube Rant

A male commuter launched into a "massive sexist rant" after missing a packed train on the London Underground during rush hour. The man, who was in his late 50s, was running for a train at Stockwell station, but was blocked by a young woman who was letting other people on the carriage, so that she could be first on the next train. The man subsequently missed his train and started "having a go" at the woman, who was in her 20s. Abi Brookman, a 25-year-old trainee accountant, was on the platform at the time and said: "He was being very aggressive and demanding she apologise, she refused. Another woman started defending her and telling him to chill out because another Tube would be along in one minute." This only angered the man further, who launched into an anti-women tirade,...

One politician’s powerful speech on Syria moved British lawmakers to tears and applause

British lawmakers on Wednesday voted 397-223 to join the US and other nations in a bombing campaign against ISIS (also known as the Islamic State) in Syria. The vote came directly after Hilary Benn, the UK Labour Party's shadow foreign secretary, Conservative Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond called "one of the greatest speeches" in the British House of Commons' history. In the speech, Benn broke with his party's leader, Jeremy Corbyn, and called for the UK to extend its airstrikes to Syria. "We have a moral and practical duty to extend to Syria the acts we are now taking in Iraq," Benn told the Commons, addressing his party directly. "We are here faced by fascists," he said of ISIS. "Not just their calculated brutality but their belief that they are superior to every singl...

Iraqis think the U.S. is in cahoots with the Islamic State, and it is hurting the war

Iraqi forces supported by US-led coalition airstrikes advance their position during clashes with Islamic State group in the western suburbs of Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad. On the front lines of the battle against the Islamic State, suspicion of the United States runs deep. Iraqi fighters say they have all seen the videos purportedly showing U.S. helicopters airdropping weapons to the militants, and many claim they have friends and relatives who have witnessed similar instances of collusion. Ordinary people also have seen the videos, heard the stories and reached the same conclusion — one that might seem absurd to Americans but is widely believed among Iraqis — that the United States is supporting the Islamic State for a variety of pernicious reasons that have to do wi...
