Around 400,000 Rohingyas arrive in Bangladesh since Aug 25: UNICEF

    UNICEF trucks filled with emergency water, sanitation and hygiene supplies for thousands of Rohingya children are headed to Cox’s Bazar, with a steady stream of supplies in the pipeline for the coming days and weeks. Up to 400,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh since August 25, with thousands more arriving every day, the UNICEF said on Thursday. Around 60 per cent are children, according to preliminary estimates, reports UNB. Council has ensured that thousands of free childcare places are available for two-year-olds during September's intake, and that child-minders across the borough are assessed by Ofsted to ensure care is of the highest possible quality. As part of World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September, Tower Hamlets Council is encouraging feedback on its suicide prevention strategy. After reviewing national guidelines and local evidence, a multi-agency steering group of experts from across the borough have worked to identify local concerns and possible solutions to help address it. Suicide is the leading cause of death in adults aged 20-34 in the UK. There has been a worrying increase in suicide across England since 2008, rising 16 per cent between 2007 and 2014. The rate in Tower Hamlets is higher than the London average and higher than in neighbouring boroughs Hackney and Newham.     A 102-year-old man given a suspended sentence on Monday for sexually abusing a girl in the 1970s is thought to be the oldest person convicted of a crime in Britain, prosecutors said. Douglas Hammersley was given a two-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to three counts of indecent assault. European Commission has announced €3m more aid for Rohingyas

    As more and more refugees arrive in Bangladesh from Myanmar, the European Commission has announced additional humanitarian aid of €3 million to address the most pressing needs of Rohingya civilians. The funding comes on top of the €12 million announced in May 2017 when Commissioner Stylianides visited Rakhine State in Myanmar. The European Commission is providing further emergency humanitarian aid as the situation continues to be critical. This additional funding will help provide emergency shelter, water, food and health assistance for newly arrived refugees in Bangladesh and people in need in Myanmar, as soon as humanitarian access to the latter is restored.
