June 8 General Election: Theresa May’s statement in full

This is the full statement made by the Prime Minister announcing that a general election is to be held on June 8: I have just chaired a meeting of the Cabinet, where we agreed that the Government should call a general election, to be held on June 8. I want to explain the reasons for that decision, what will happen next and the choice facing the British people when you come to vote in this election. Last summer, after the country voted to leave the European Union, Britain needed certainty, stability and strong leadership, and since I became Prime Minister the Government has delivered precisely that. Despite predictions of immediate financial and economic danger, since the referendum we have seen consumer confidence remain high, record numbers of jobs, and economic growth th...

UK gave millions in foreign aid to North Korean regime now threatening nuclear war

North Korea has received more than £4 million in foreign aid from the UK in just six years despite the country’s status as an international pariah, according to reports. Tensions with the communist regime ruled by dictator Kim Jong-un have escalated after it said it would conduct weekly missile tests and warned that all-out war would result from US military action. Meanwhile, Mike Pence, the US vice-president, told Pyongyang not to test Donald Trump’s resolve as fears of a military conflict continue to grow over North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons . But despite the country’s status as a rogue state official statistics cited by the Daily Mail show that £740,000 was sent to North Korea by the UK to fund aid projects in 2015 with the Foreign Office reportedly committed t...

Trump congratulates Erdogan after contentious win

US President Donald Trump called Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan to congratulate him on winning a referendum expanding his authority, sources in Erdogan’s palace said on Monday. Turkey voted on Sunday to switch to a presidential system, greatly increasing Erdogan’s powers. Unofficial results, which the opposition said it would challenge, showed a narrow victory for him with 51.4 per cent of votes cast in favour. The constitutional reforms are set to grant more powers to Erdogan, effecting a changeover from parliamentary to the presidential form of government in Turkey. The amendments to the constitution are likely to allow him to hold office for two more terms until 2029. According to a White House statement, Trump spoke on Monday with Erdogan, discussing the developmen...

Theresa May asks MPs to back snap election

Theresa May is seeking to hold a General Election on 8 June arguing it is the only way to secure stability ahead of Brexit. The shock move follows speculation the Prime Minister would call a poll to shore up her parliamentary position as Britain leaves the EU and given Labour's dire position in the polls. Under the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, introduced under the last coalition government, the next election was not due until 2020. However, a poll can be called before then if backed by two thirds of MPs or if there is a no confidence vote in the Government. The PM is to table a motion in the House of Commons on Wednesday and has called on MPs to back an election. PM Theresa May Jeremy Corbyn has previously said Labour was ready to take its case to the country, but many MPs ...
