Cabin crew help deliver baby at 42000 feet flight

A Turkish Airlines jet arrived at its destination with an extra passenger after cabin crew helped a woman give birth mid-flight. Nafi Diaby, suddenly went into labour while flying from Conakry, Guinea, to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. Unfazed by the on flight frisson, the crew coped admirably and the little girl, Kadiju, entered the world at 42,000 feet. Mother and baby were taken to hospital when the aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, landed. Both are reported to be doing well. This is not the first time this has happened. Flight crews are trained to deal with such emergencies. Kadiju’s place of birth, and ultimately her nationality, could be an interesting matter of debate. She could get her nationality from her mother or she could be classified as having been born in the countr...

14000 year old village discovered in Canada one of oldest settlements ever found in North America

Archaeologists at the site are unearthing tools for lighting fires, fish hooks and spears dating back to the Ice Age An ancient village believed to be one of the oldest human settlements ever found in North America has been discovered during an excavation on a remote island in British Columbia. The village, which is estimated to be 14,000 years old, has been found on a rocky spit on Triquet Island, about 500 kilometres northwest of Victoria, Canada. It is estimated the village is older than Egypt’s pyramids. Scientists said the artefacts being unearthed, which include tools for lighting fires, fish hooks and spears dating back to the Ice Age, are painting a picture of how civilisation began in North America, CTV Vancouver Island News reports. Theresa May Must let brits remain EU citizen

The European Parliament’s chief Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt is calling on Theresa May to be “open” to a plan helping British people who want to retain EU citizenship after the UK leaves. Writing exclusively for The Independent, Mr Verhofstadt sends a clear and direct message to the Prime Minister that he wants the European Union to make a generous offer to people in the UK angry at losing EU privileges. In response to his article a government spokesman has now said that Ms May and Brexit Secretary David Davis are actually ready to discuss any proposals that are put forward. The European Parliament has already cemented into its formal negotiating guidelines its intention to explore what a potential offer to Brits might look like, with ideas including allowing them to ...

Norway police destroy suspect device in Oslo

Norwegian police said on Sunday they had destroyed a suspect ‘bomb-like’ device in the capital Oslo and made one arrest, on the heels of a deadly truck attack in neighbouring Sweden killed four people. Bomb disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion overnight Saturday, a Norwegian police statement said. Police cordoned off part of the busy Gronland district and evacuated local bars and restaurants after the crude device—described as having the capacity to cause only limited damage—was discovered Saturday evening. Norway’s PST police security agency is investigating. There were no immediate further details. The device was discovered a day after four people were killed and 15 injured after a truck rammed into shoppers in Stockholm. Swedish police have detained a 39...

US navy strike group heads toward Korean peninsula

The US Navy said on Saturday it had sent a carrier-led strike group to the Korean peninsula in a show of force against North Korea’s reckless nuclear weapons programme. The move will raise tensions in the region and comes hard on the heels of a US missile strike on Syria that was widely interpreted as putting Pyongyang on warning over its refusal to abandon its nuclear ambitions. North Korea denounced Thursday’s strike as an act of intolerable aggression and one that justified a million times over the North’s push toward a credible nuclear deterrent. US Pacific Command ordered the Carl Vinson Strike Group north as a prudent measure to maintain readiness and presence in the Western Pacific, said Commander Dave Benham, spokesman at US Pacific Command. The number one threat i...

Death toll in Egypt church bombing reaches 21, 50 hurt

The death toll in a church bombing in the Egyptian Nile Delta city of Tanta has climbed to 21, with 50 more injured, state television said on Sunday. There was no immediate claim of responsibility and the cause of the blast, just one week before Coptic Easter and the same month as Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Egypt, was not known. Islamic State’s branch in Egypt, which has waged a low-level conflict for years in the Sinai peninsula, has stepped up attacks on Christians in Egypt in recent months. A suicide bombing at Cairo’s largest Coptic cathedral killed at least 25 people and wounded 49 in December, many of them women and children, in one of the deadliest attacks on Egypt’s Christian minority in years. Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack. A sh...

TV presenter reads out breaking news of her husband’s death in car crash

An Indian TV presenter has been praised as extremely brave after she reportedly read out the breaking news of her husband’s death in a car accident on a 24-hour popular news channel. Supreet Kaur read out the news bulletin after a reporter phoned in details of a fatal accident, which had killed three of the five people travelling in a Renault Duster. The 28-year-old to realise quickly realised her husband was likely to be one of those killed as he was meant to travel in a Renault Duster along the same route and at the same time with four companions, the Hindustan Times reports. A news anchor for Chhattisgarh’s IBC-24 channel for nine years, Ms Kaur kept her composure throughout the news bulletin. It was only after the news hour, when she walked out of the TV studio, that s...
