Women in Saudi Arabia will now be notified of divorce by text

Women in Saudi Arabia will be informed by text message that their marriages have ended under a new regulation aimed at ending the practice of secret divorce, whereby men in the kingdom could unilaterally decide to separate without informing their wives. The new measure was approved by the country’s justice ministry on Sunday, Agence France-Presse reports citing local media. Women… will be notified of any changes to their marital status via text message, the justice ministry said in a statement run on the Saudi state-operated Al-Ekhbariya news channel. The report added that women could access documents related to the termination of their marriage contracts on the ministry’s website. Under previous statutes, Saudi men could trigger a divorce unilaterally without tell...

Why young Muslim men are cleaning up America’s national parks

A group of young Muslim men fanned out across the Mall shortly after sunrise Sunday to pick up litter and empty trash cans. Following President Trump’s warning Friday that a partial government shutdown could last for months or even years, the men arrived with trash bags and gloves to do what the federal government is no longer doing collecting trash. Their peers were doing the same over the weekend in national parks in Pennsylvania, Florida, California and Ohio. It’s just what we do, Sarmad Bhatti, 23, said as he emptied trash cans along Independence Avenue. If there’s an opportunity to serve, that is what Muslims do. The men are part of the youth group of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a branch of Islam that preaches about the importance of tolerance and has face...

Migrants found after empty boat sparks search

Up to five migrants are understood to be in police care after a dinghy was found on the Kent coast. The empty inflatable boat was found on a beach in Dungeness at 8.10am on Monday, prompting an extensive search of the Channel by the coastguard. Search teams were stood down when it became clear there were no maritime casualties. According to the Press Association, five migrants were found. The Border Force has not commented on the incident, but a spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "HM Coastguard has been coordinating a search at Dungeness in Kent after an empty RHIB (rigid-hulled inflatable boat) was found on the shore. The spokesman added the coastguard is "only concerned with preservation of life, rescuing those in trouble and bringing them sa...

UK companies shift £800bn in assets to Europe

Financial services companies have moved almost £800bn of assets to Europe since the EU referendum, according to a new report. The study from EY, which tracks 222 of the largest UK financial services firms regarding their efforts to reduce the effects of an uncertain Brexit on their operations, highlights the broad-ranging business ramifications of Britain’s divorce from the EU. “As things stand, and per regulatory expectations, financial services firms have no choice but to continue preparing on the basis of a ‘no deal’ scenario,” said Omar Ali, UK financial services leader at EY. The £800bn figure was determined using public announcements of asset transfers, but EY cautions that not all firms publicly declare the value of their transferred assets. “This number is...

UK’s nuclear deterrent sub has unusual level of damage

One of Britain's nuclear deterrent submarines has suffered an unusual amount of damage as pictures emerge of HMS Vengeance returning from patrol with around 30 per cent of her sonar panels missing. The ballistic missile submarine returned last week from her latest three-month patrol. As the nuclear-armed vessel surfaced near the Faslane naval base on the Clyde it was obvious the expected level of wear and tear had been exceeded by up to  three times the usual amount. Britain’s ballistic missile submarines are covered with sonar panels specially designed acoustic shields to mask any sound from inside the submarine and absorb the sound waves of an active sonar emitted by another vessel looking for the boat. Maybe her replacement wasn’t ready, meaning she had a longe...

Belgium bans halal and kosher slaughter methods

A Belgian ban on the Muslim and Jewish ways of ritually slaughtering animals went into effect on New Year’s Day, part of a clash across Europe over the balance between animal welfare and religious freedom. With both animal rights advocates and right-wing nationalists pushing to ban ritual slaughter, religious minorities in Belgium and other countries fear that they are the targets of bigotry under the guise of animal protection. “It is impossible to know the true intentions of people,” said Yaakov David Schmahl, a senior rabbi in Antwerp. “Unless people state clearly what they have in mind, but most anti-Semites don’t do that.” Laws across Europe and European Union regulations require that animals be rendered insensible to pain before slaughter, to make the process...
