Prince Ali against postponement of presidential election after Sepp Blatter suspension

FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan is strongly opposing moves to postpone the election. The election of the successor to Sepp Blatter is scheduled for February 28 but an emergency meeting of FIFA's executive committee next week is due to discuss postponing it due to the crisis that has struck the world governing body. Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini, who was due to stand against Prince Ali, have both been provisionally banned by FIFA's ethics committee for 90 days over a £1.35million payment made to the Frenchman. Nominations for the election are due to close on October 26 and Prince Ali said the rules on the election should remain. He said in a statement: "Recent events at FIFA have shown us that no one is above the law. The ethics c...

7 Places Where Dying Is Not Allowed

A view of Waverley Cemetery in Sydney. Many towns in Europe have urged their residents to become immortal. Death is usually considered the worst punishment possible for a crime. But what if the crime itself is death? In several cities around the world, municipal officials have forbidden residents to die, by threat of…well, basically nothing. No one has come up with a good punishment for the dead just yet. France and Italy are particularly prone to declaring death unlawful, mostly because it’s has proven to be a successful way to protest untenable restrictions against cemetery expansions. Because when there’s no room to bury people, the only acceptable choice is to outlaw the Grim Reaper. Here are seven towns that have urged their residents to become immortal—or at leas...

New era beckons for supersonic Air Travel

Supersonics are back. Around the world, aerospace companies and organisations, including Nasa, are developing the technology that will allow passengers once again to fly at faster than the speed of sound. The first of this new breed of aircraft could be flying early in the 2020s. It was way back in 2003 that Concorde was retired. The airliner entered service in 1976 but was hobbled by complaints that it was too loud. As a result, it could only break the sound barrier when flying over the ocean. This restricted its operation and turned it into a niche aircraft operated only by British Airways and Air France on transatlantic flights. The technology simply did not exist to create a new generation of practical and efficient supersonic airliners,” says Doug Nichols, CEO of ...

Men and women have different priorities when house buying

Men and women 'have different priorities when house buying' Male house hunters are more likely than women to prioritise being close to work and having decent transport links when looking for somewhere to live, research has found. The findings also suggest that a w oman's home is her castle, as female house hunters are more likely to value indoor space above anything else , according to Santander Mortgages. One in three (31%) women surveyed said that having some decent space within a home was their priority, while a similar proportion of men (35%) wanted to be close to work. The research among more than 2,000 people also found that being close to green outdoor space, moving to an "up and coming" area and having nicer neighbours tend to be factors that men are more concerned...

Vegetable prices to remain high for another month

Prices of different varieties of vegetables will not be stable until new crops come to the markets. It will take a month or more for them to pacify people with fresh tastes with cheap prices, according to the traders and DAE officials. Incessant rain in August led to nearly 7,000 hectare land across 24 districts going under water, causing huge losses to farmers. Seventy-eight per cent of the submerged crop lands were damaged, according to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE). Farmers who have sus-tained losses will soon be indemnified with 10,257 farmers of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sherpur and Lalmonirhat already provided with late variety seeds of some crops free-of-cost which have been sowed in the fields after water left them. Even floating seedbeds in flood...

Unfair mortgage rejections to be investigated by watchdogs

Banks could be told to offer mortgages to older borrowers, pregnant women and customers frozen out of the cheapest deals after the financial watchdog announced an investigation into unfair rejections. Officials are understood to be concerned that lenders are wrongly using rules introduced in 2014 to block responsible people from buying and moving homes and remortgaging. Testimony from older borrowers suggests many are being denied loans that would stretch into retirement, even if they have sufficient money to pay off the capital and interest. "This investigation by the FCA is absolutely essential because there are people out there, who consider themselves perfectly good borrowers, who are being frozen out of the market." A survey published today found that one in 10 women ...

UK made secret pact with Saudi Arabia for human rights council place

The UK made a clandestine vote-trading deal with Saudi Arabia to enable both countries to secure a place in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), leaked Saudi diplomatic cables have revealed. The classified documents suggest David Cameron's government initiated backroom talks with Riyadh ahead of the November 2013 vote in New York to ask for support. Both countries were eventually elected to the UNHRC, which has 47 member states. A Foreign Office spokesman refused to confirm if the vote-trading deal had taken place, saying it was "standard practice" not to reveal voting records. Saudi Arabia has one of the worst human rights records in the world, and has executed more than 130 people this year. Its recent appointment to the chair of an influential five-member UNHRC panel dr...
