Chief Suspect Is an ISIS Militant Whose Own Family Wished Him Dead

When the family of Abdelhamid Abaaoud received word from Syria last fall that he had been killed fighting for the Islamic State, it rejoiced at what it took to be excellent news about a wayward son it had come to despise. We are praying that Abdelhamid really is dead, his older sister, Yasmina, said at the time. Their prayers and the hopes of Western security officials were not answered. Mr. Abaaoud, then 26, was in reality on his way back to Europe to meet secretly with Islamic extremists who shared his determination to spread mayhem. He has since been linked to a string of terrorist operations that culminated with Friday’s attacks in Paris. “Of course, it is not joyous to make blood flow. But, from time to time, it is pleasant to see the blood of disbelievers,” Mr. Abaao...

Migrants pose as Syrians to help asylum claims

Migrants at a government hostel in south London have said some are posing as Syrians to improve their chances of getting asylum. Another temporary resident admitted to us he changed his story to help his cause as he travelled through Europe. After trekking across Europe, Muhammed Manlaal flew to London from Germany. As a Syrian from war-torn Aleppo he was guaranteed asylum in Germany. But he wanted to come to the UK because he speaks English to study here. He showed us with pride his application to stay in Britain. But the trainee architect says his nationality makes him the envy of some of his fellow hostel residents. He said: "Lots of people want to be Syrian. Some people say they are Syrian. They take the place for Syrians which is not good." Muhammed told us there are ...

Bangaldesh another feather in the cap

A ruthless Bangladesh recorded its fifth straight ODI series victory at home, crushing Zimbabwe by 58 runs in the second match yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital. Unlike the first match, Bangladesh had to toil hard to seal the deal as Elton Chigumbura and Sikandar offered a staunch resistance in fifth wicket partnership. Fast bowler Al-Amin Hossain dismissed both of them in consecutive overs in his second spell to ruin the hopes of Zimbabwe. It was Bangladesh’s fourth straight victory at home in this year after they had successfully got the better of three top ranked teams- Pakistan, India and South Africa. Opener Imrul Kayes lifted Bangladesh to 241 for nine Zimbabwe, hitting 76 in his comeback. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 183 in 43.2 over...

This is officially the WORST place to live in the UK where you should escape to instead: Can you guess where it is

Bradford residents should pack their bags and move 238 miles north. It's just been named the worst town in the UK, according to a quality of life index. Instead, if you want to have a nice house and a good job, then it’s time to move to Edinburgh. The Scottish capital has been crowned best place to live in the UK. It has the lowest crime rate in the UK, cheap energy bills and disposable household income of £20,083 a year. Plus, the average broadband download speed is a racy 30Mbs. By contrast, Northern Ireland and England have some of the grimmest towns around. The study compared different factors including salaries, the cost of shopping and fuel, working hours, life expectancy and hours of sunshine. Ann Robinson, from uSwitch, which compiled the index, said: “Edinburgh ha...

Junior doctors reject misleading pay offer and criticise Jeremy Hunt

A strike by junior doctors has moved a step closer after their union angrily rejected Jeremy Hunt’s latest offer and accused him of devaluing their key role in the NHS. The junior doctors committee of the British Medical Association denounced the health secretary’s offer, including an 11% rise in their basic pay, as nowhere near enough to assuage their fears over a new contract he plans to impose on them from next summer. The further deterioration in relations between Hunt and the doctors’ union came as the BMA prepared to start balloting 30,000 junior medics in England about possible industrial action. Votes can be cast from Thursday and will be counted when the process ends on 18 November. The union dismissed Hunt’s pledge that no junior doctor working within the current...

Stressed, Tired, Rushed: A Portrait of the Modern Family

Jakub Zielkiewicz, Aimee Barnes and their 15-month-old son, Roman, at their home in Sacramento. “You basically just always feel like you’re doing a horrible job at everything,” Ms. Barnes said. Children are much more likely than not to grow up in a household in which their parents work, and in nearly half of all two-parent families today, both parents work full time, a sharp increase from previous decades. What hasn’t changed: the difficulty of balancing it all. Working parents say they feel stressed, tired, rushed and short on quality time with their children, friends, partners or hobbies, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. The survey found something of a stress gap by race and education. College-educated parents and white parents were significantly more likel...
