No comment from rebel local MP Rushanara Ali

Five years ago, Labour’s National Executive removed Lutfur Rahman as Labour’s candidate for mayor of Tower Hamlets without notice. Several local Labour figures condemned the then Cllr Lutfur Rahman for standing as an independent candidate – because this was breaking Labour Party rules. Now Rushanara Ali, the local Labour MP, has also broken Labour Party rules. The party whip in the House of Commons issued strict instructions that all Labour MPs should vote against Chancellor George Osborne’s Fiscal Charter” Rushanara abstained – helping the Conservatives push through their austerity measures. And now she’s tight-lipped, not giving any explanation for her actions. The row centres on a vote in the House of Commons on 14th October, on a “Charter for Budget Responsibility” put...

And now, the penalty for filing your tax return too EARLY

And now, the penalty for filing your tax return too EARLY If you’re among the millions who file their own self-assessment tax returns you will understand me when I refer to the pleasant sensation of having done the job for the year. Many people, including myself, are gearing up about now to complete the return for the year ending April 2015, which has to be filed by the end of January . I like to complete it before Christmas. But here’s a salutary warning for anyone who is extra-organised: even if you complete your return far ahead of the deadline, don’t submit it too early – as there is a danger of unexpected consequences in your tax coding. As a result, your monthly pay could be unexpectedly reduced. Accountants Baker Tilly recently reported on just such a case. A taxpay...

NHS spends millions on larger equipment for obese

The NHS has spent at least £7m adapting or replacing equipment to fit obese patients The NHS has spent at least £7 million on adapting services and equipment to treat obese patients over the last five years, according to new figures. The data, obtained by Sky News through Freedom of Information requests, revealed many NHS foundation trusts increased spending on bariatric provisions in the last two years. Money was spent on items including bigger beds, wheelchairs and mortuary slabs, the broadcaster said. The new figures come amid a row between health campaigners and the Government over the introduction of a sugar tax to help curb obesity. Of 100 foundation trusts asked for information, around half responded suggesting the overall amount of money spent could be higher. Acco...

Britain’s most prolific speed camera nabs 48 drivers A Day in East London

A speed camera in east London has been revealed to be the most prolific in the country - catching almost 50 motorists A DAY. Data released under Freedom of Information Act revealed that the camera, on the westbound carriageway in the Limehouse Link Tunnel, snared a staggering 17,620 motorists in 2014-15. London is also home to the 10th most prolfiic speed camera, on Tower Bridge South. The camera, which is operated by City of London police, snapped on average 14 speeding drivers per day. Roger Lawson, from the Alliance of British Drivers, said the use of the cameras was unjustifiable. He said: Clearly it's unjustified and they should do something about it. The engineering of the road is not appropriate if they're catching that many people a day. I think the cameras in that...

Theresa May says police knife crime claims are simply not true

Theresa May, the Home Secretary, is to accuse Britain's top police officer of making untrue claims over the causes of rising knife crime. In a hard-hitting speech to a policing conference, Mrs May will insist it is "simply not true" that incidents involving knives have increased due to Home Office-led changes to stop and search powers. Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, announced in June that he was sanctioning renewed use of the controversial powers as he explicitly linked their rationing with a 25 per cent jump in knife crime in the capital. In a rebuke which signals ever-worsening relations between the Home Secretary, Sir Bernard and other senior officers, Mrs May will accuse them of "a knee-jerk reaction on the back of a false link". The Home...

Former Supreme Court judge AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury attacked in London

Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury, a former Supreme Court judge who retired recently, has been attacked in London. His daughter Nadia Choudhury said in a Facebook post that she and her father landed at London's Heathrow airport on Wednesday night. Before heading home, the two drove off to a Durga Puja pavilion in York Hall at Bethnal Green, she said. As the two came out of the pavilion, a person came up to them and asked her father if he was indeed AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury. When he did not reply, the youngman attacked him. Few others joined up and kicked and punched Shamsuddin, his daughter said in the FB post. The attackers snatched his mobile phone as the former judge hit the ground, his daughter said. Refugee boats wash up at UK military base in Cyprus

Three overloaded boats carrying 140 refugees from Syria have washed up at Britain’s military base in Cyprus, potentially opening up a new front line in the migration crisis. The refugees, believed to include women and children, have been transferred to a temporary reception area at the sovereign base at Akrotiri on southern coast of the Mediterranean island. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence confirmed that four boats had arrived at the base, which has been used to launch airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. The MoD is still gathering details about the incident, including the number of refugees involved. “I believe it is more than a hundred, but there is no confirmation of the exact number at the moment,” the spokesman said. He said it was unc...

More than 22,000 die in Scotland’s deadliest winter in 15 years

The IndependentLast winter was the deadliest that Scotland has experienced for 15 years, official statistics have revealed, leading to calls for ministers to take action against the “scourge” of homes which are cold or difficult to heat. More than 22,000 deaths were registered in Scotland between December and March, according to data published by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) on 20 October – the highest overall number since the winter of 1999. The spike follows a record low of 18,675 deaths in the winter of 2013/14. The Scottish Government said the rise in the death toll could reflect the growing number of elderly people living in Scotland with multiple health problems. Respiratory and circulatory diseases were responsible for many of the deaths. Last winter’s “seasonal i...
