Saudi King Salman Promotes his Son as Successor

Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was promoted to crown prince on Wednesday, replacing his cousin in a sudden announcement that confirms King Salman’s 31-year-old son as next ruler of the kingdom. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef has been relieved of his post and replaced by Mohammed bin Salman who becomes deputy prime minister and retains his defense and other portfolios, a royal decree issued by the Saudi state agency said SPA. Although Mohammed bin Salman's promotion was expected among close circles it came as a surprise at a time the kingdom is facing escalating tensions with Qatar and Iran and is locked in an air war in Yemen. Theresa May’s director of policy quits following general election fiasco

Theresa May’s director of policy involved in drawing up the Conservative election manifesto has left his post, leaving Ms May without another of her key aides. Ms May had brought John Godfrey in as head of the influential policy unit in July 2016, but Downing Street sources confirmed to The Independent that he has gone. It comes amid the fallout of the botched election campaign with the Prime Minister already having lost her two chiefs of staff, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill in an exodus of her top team. Sources close to Number 10 have said that despite cabinet ministers demanding Ms May cut her aides loose, the Prime Minister has stayed in communication with Ms Hill. Mr Godfrey’s departure after less than a year, follows that of his deputy Will Tanner who left his position ...

Festival goers to face 30C heat before thunderstorms move in

Festival-goers arriving at Glastonbury will face temperatures of 30C as a heatwave grips the country for a fifth day. Music fans arriving at Worthy Farm, Somerset, on Wednesday will face a hot walk to pitch their tents. But extensive thunderstorms are expected to sweep in from late afternoon into the night, bringing torrential downpours, frequent lightning and a chance of hail. The UK is expected to bask in the hottest June day for 40 years with highs of 34C (93F) forecast in west London. It could make it the hottest June day since the 35.6C (96F) recorded in Southampton on June 28 1976. If the mercury surpasses the 31.7C (89F) recorded at Camden Square, north London, in 1936, it will be the hottest summer solstice on record. People enjoy the hot weather on the beach in Sc...

Marco Rubio’s awkward hug with Ivanka Trump

Ivanka Trump, daughter of President Trump, is greeted by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., as she arrives at the Capitol to meet with lawmakers about parental leave. Sen. Marco Rubio went in for the hug with Ivanka Trump on Tuesday, and, well, something happened. We're just not sure what. It wasn't quite a chummy embrace or a firm denial. Rather, as displayed in a delightfully awkward photo, Rubio approached stiff as a board while Trump stood straight, not reciprocating. Not since the Florida Republican took a water break during his 2013 State of the Union response has he looked so stilted. At least no one on the Internet noticed. Just kidding. Twitter seized the moment, gleefully spreading the photo snapped by Associated Press photographer Erica Werner. Ultimately, he deemed a hu...

Grenfell Tower tragedy: Firefighters put out fridge blaze and were just leaving when flats erupted in flames

Firefighters had put out the initial fridge fire at Grenfell Tower and were leaving the building when the blaze suddenly flared up, it has emerged. Crews believed they had put out the fire at the London high-rise and were astonished to see flames rising up the side of the building, new reports have claimed. All the latest news, views and opinion on the Grenfell tragedy Shortly after dealing with the fridge fire early last Wednesday, firefighters were telling residents that it was out, BBC Panorama reported. But, soon after, the 24-storey building was consumed by flames in one of Britain's biggest ever tower block fires that left at least 79 people dead. Panorama on Monday night reported that firefighters had seen flames "shooting up" the side of the building. Those reports...

Belgium investigates station bomber shot dead by soldiers

Belgian counter-terrorism police are investigating the motives of a suspected suicide bomber shot dead by troops guarding a Brussels railway station after he set off explosives that failed to injure anyone. We consider this a terrorist attack, prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt told reporters, declining to comment on witness accounts that the man had shouted Islamist slogans before detonating what witnesses said were one or two devices in luggage. Broadcaster VTM quoted Interior Minister Jan Jambon as saying investigators had identified the man but were not releasing his name. A larger bomb failed to go off, VTM said. Public broadcaster VRT said investigators believed the man had a nail bomb that failed to detonate completely. Although no one was hurt, billows of smoke pouring t...
