The Grenfell Tower fire could be beginning of the end of Theresa May’s premiership

The Grenfell Tower fire could be beginning of the end of Theresa May’s premiership

The biggest test of any prime minister is how they represent the country in times of crisis and grief. In her response to the Grenfell Tower fire, Theresa May is failing that test. Her botched private visit to the scene of the fire, in which she failed to meet any residents, reportedly because of "security fears" caused huge anger among those affected, as did her subsequent media interviews in which she failed to even acknowledge the anger that had been caused. Pictures of the PM at the scene, taken from a distance, helped crystallise what is fast becoming a settled view of the PM as a cold and distant figure out of touch with the public she represents. The contrast with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who spent a long time speaking, hugging and listening to those affected by...

The secret button on plane seats that can give you more space

Unless you're loaded and fly business or first class, space is hard to find on airplanes. This tip might help you: a 'secret' button under the armrests. Obviously, armrests are welcome. We can lean on them, or perhaps prop up a pillow and get a bit of sleep. But armrests are also quite confining particularly on smaller, budget flights around Europe. It's unlikely you'll get any sleep on a morning trip out to southern Spain, so you may as well maximise drinking beer room. According to Insider , the a 'secret button' is underneath the armrest, next to the hinge. Sliding your hand under the frame and pressing the button should allow you to ease the armrest up. It gives your body more space, and a little more legroom too. The trick is also handy when you're alighting the aircr...

The secret stories to overthrow Theresa May threatens ministers running the horses harsh Brexit

Theresa May will face a stalking horse challenge to topple her as Prime Minister if she waters down Brexit, senior Tories have warned. Leading Eurosceptic MPs have told The Telegraph they are prepared to mount an immediate leadership challenge if Mrs May deviates from her original plan. The revelation comes after a torrid week for the Prime Minister in which she faced fierce criticism for her handling of the Grenfell Tower catastrophe. Conservative MPs including Cabinet ministers have concluded that Mrs May cannot lead them into the next election and they are now discussing when she could go. Ramadan comes with bitter taste for families of Iraq’s Mosul

For Umm Mohammed and other residents of areas of war battered west Mosul recaptured from Islamic State group jihadists, this year’s Muslim holy month of Ramadan carries a bitter taste. Our homes and cars have been destroyed, our family separated, said the former bank manager in Iraq’s second largest city. Why should we have to wait here in this long queue to get aid? We used to have a dream life and we’ve fallen all the way down to the bottom, said the 38-year-old mother of two, declining to give her full name for fear of reprisals against family members left behind in districts still under jihadist control. IS seized the northern city of Mosul in June 2014 and imposed a brutal form of Islamist rule and a regime of terror on its inhabitants. Life has been made even harder ...

Grenfell Tower cladding banned in UK: Chancellor

Cladding used on Grenfell Tower blamed for spreading the blaze is banned in Britain, Philip Hammond has said. The Chancellor said a criminal investigation would examine whether building regulations had been breached when the block was overhauled. Mr Hammond said the public inquiry set up by the Government following the tragedy would also examine if rules had been broken. "These are very complex technical issues" @PhilipHammondUK says public inquiry into #GrenfellTower will determine who's at fault #marrpic.twitter.com/Hzyu5In6H8 — The Andrew Marr Show (@MarrShow) June 18, 2017 He told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show: “My understanding is the cladding in question, this flammable cladding which is banned in Europe and the US, is also banned here. So there are two separate questio...

Huge Portugal forest fire kills 25: injures 20

A huge forest fire in central Portugal killed at least 25 people and injured 20 others, most of them burning to death in their cars, the government said Sunday. Several hundred firefighters and 160 vehicles were dispatched late Saturday to tackle the blaze, which broke out in the afternoon in the municipality of Pedrogao Grande before spreading fast across several fronts. ‘Unfortunately this seems to be the greatest tragedy we have seen in recent years in terms of forest fires,’ the visibly moved Prime Minister Antonio Costa said. ‘The number of fatalities could still rise,’ he said at the Civil Protection headquarters near Lisbon. ‘The priority now is to save those people who could still be in danger.’ Portugal was sweltering under a severe heatwave Saturday, with tempera...
