Fire in Bethnal Green at block of flats: 50 firefighters tackle blaze (video)

More than 70 firefighters are tackling a huge blaze at a block of flats in Bethnal Green. Ten fire engines and 72 officers were sent to the scene in Turin Street on Saturday afternoon. The local residents spread the videos of some eager young boys spreading their mobile phones. Bethnal Green Road is closed both ways between Satchwell Road and Turin street. Thick black smoke poured into the sky as firefighters fought the blaze which broke out in a third floor flat. Paramedics took one man to hospital who was suffering from smoke inhalation. Images and video footage showed bright flames billowing from the roof. London Fire Brigade said the whole of the third floor and the roof are alight. One image shared on social media shows the entirety of the roof destroyed. And one horr...

Hijab wearing model Halima Aden appears on the cover of Allure

A Somali model has become the first woman ever to grace the cover of Amercian beauty magazine Allure, while wearing a hijab. Halima Aden, who is only 19 years old, is pictured wearing Nike's high-performance hijab on the cover of the July issue of the women's magazine, with a caption that says This is American Beauty. Aden has long been working to busy stereotypes of Muslim women in the media, having appeared in the bikini round of the 2016 Miss Minnesota USA beauty pageant while wearing a burkini and hijab. Since then, she's also walked in the Yeezy season five show at New York Fashion Week and made headlines by being the first hijab-wearing woman to grace the cover of Vogue. Jeremy Corbyn’s plan to pay 16 year olds £10 living wage

Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn speaks to delegates at the Unison Conference on June 23, 2017 in Brighton, England. A plan by Jeremy Corbyn to pay 16-year-olds a "living wage" of £10 an hour could prevent young people from getting onto the jobs ladder and lead to companies employing fewer workers, business groups have warned. The British Chambers of Commerce said that hiking the wage paid to teenagers could price them out of the workplace. The Adam Smith Institute, a free market think-tank, warned that the move could lead to businesses opting for older workers rather than younger, riskier hires, adding that it could also drive up the costs of groceries as supermarkets face higher wage bills. The warnings came after Mr Corbyn told a union conference that Labour's manifesto poli...

Bomber planning to attack Mecca’s Grand Mosque blows himself up ministry

Saudi security forces on Friday foiled a suicide attack on the Grand Mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca, cornering the would-be attacker in an apartment, where he blew himself up, the Interior Ministry said. In a statement read on state television, the ministry said that three cells had planned the attack on worshippers and security forces at the mosque as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan nears its climax. The trapped would-be suicide bomber exchanged fire with the security forces, then set off explosives when he was surrounded in a house in the central Mecca neighbourhood of Ajyad al-Masafi near the mosque that had been used as the base for the attack, the ministry said. The building collapsed, injuring six foreigners and five members of the security forces. Grand Mo...

Hard Brexit under threat as MPs from all parties

Strategies to amend future legislation including a key immigration bill to force ministers to listen to business groups and to show the EU that Parliament wants a softer exit are being drawn up, The Independent has learned. One Conservative MP said the aim was to give confidence to bullied ministers who are reluctant to speak out, despite sharing the view that the Prime Minister’s plans put Britain on the road to disaster. Another MP outlined the importance of convincing Brussels that Parliament can coordinate to present a different, more EU-friendly policy to that of the Government. It would really show how power has shifted if Parliament can coordinate itself and that’s not impossible, the MP said. We are talking to each other and will continue to talk to each other this...

Hundreds of homes evacuated tower blocks in Camden

Hundreds of residents of four tower blocks in Camden, north London, have spent the night in emergency accommodation after they were told to leave their homes amid fire safety fears. The blocks, containing up to 800 households, were evacuated following news that similar cladding was used on the Chalcots Estate to that which spread the Grenfell Tower fire in Kensington earlier this month. Council leader Georgia Gould said that, following checks, insulation was found to be safe but external cladding on the blocks was not up to the standard that we wanted and was not fire retardant. She added that the really, really difficult decision had been made to evacuate the blocks while urgent fire safety work is completed. It is thought the work will take three to four weeks. We realis...

Statement on Denning Point cladding

A spokesperson for East End Homes and Tower Hamlets Council said: Ongoing tests on residential buildings clad with ACM (Aluminium Composite Material) panels in Tower Hamlets has identified that Denning Point, owned by Eastend Homes, does not fully comply with the requirements of the testing regime. The panel is a fire retardant (FR) version of the cladding panel and EastendHomes will be seeking further information on the results of sample of the panel supplied for testing. The Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) for the block was undertaken very recently in March 2017 and a further comprehensive joint inspection with the Fire Brigade took place this morning. All measures recommended by the Fire Brigade are in place and in addition Eastend Homes has immediately introduced further measures to meet DC...
