Canary Wharf incident: second man dies after falling from height

A man has died after falling from a height inside a Canary Wharf shopping centre in the second tragedy in just two days.

Emergency crews were called to the scene in east London this morning after the middle-aged man was heard plunging to the ground.

Shocked workers described hearing a ping then a “distinct thud” before a body was seen lying on the floor near escalators.

Paramedics raced to the scene, but the man, believed to be in his 50s, sadly could not be saved, Scotland Yard confirmed.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: We were called at 8.39am today to Canada Square, E14 to reports of an incident.

We sent an incident response officer, two single responders in cars and an ambulance crew to the scene. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

Sadly, despite the efforts of our medics, a person died at the scene.

The Canary Wharf Group said in an earlier statement: We can confirm that there has been a medical incident on the Canary Wharf estate.

We are supporting the emergency services in their response.

Jordan Bruin, a manager at a nearby clothing shop, was among those who ran out to see what was happening after hearing the loudest bang.

The 25-year-old recalled: I ran out of the shop and there was a guy lying on the floor, he had fallen from the top floor.

The noise was unlike anything I had ever heard before I thought it must have been a gun shot then I heard screaming.

A woman who works in the shopping centre described hearing a scream before security staff started running towards the scene.

She told us: I just heard this thud and then someone screamed. I looked to see what had happened, like a reflex, but I couldn’t see anything because it was on the floor below me.
