Chinese media warns of war with US

Chinese media warns of war with US after Trump's state department pick stirs South China Sea row Blocking Chinese access to islands in the South China Sea would require the US to wage war, an influential Chinese state-run tabloid said on Friday, after US Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson suggested the strategy on Wednesday. The media salvo from China is the latest sign of increased tensions between the countries since president-elect Donald Trump accepted a telephone call from Taiwan's leader, Tsai Ing-wen. Mr Tillerson told his confirmation hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee that he wanted to send a signal to China that their access to islands in the disputed South China Sea is not going to be allowed. He did not elaborate. The United States w...

Sex-for-rent is the hidden danger faced by more and more female tenants

The private rented sector is broken and house-hunting is a dreadful task fraught with abject desperation. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, to the list of nasties (the grasping letting agents and truculent and capricious buy-to-let owners) whom tenants confront can now be added creepy, predatory rentiers offering homes in return for sex. In the weird swamp world of online portals, everything is so much more dangerous. Female tenants are especially vulnerable when flat-hunting, and some landlords are quite open about what they expect, while others hide in plain sight. The basic act of flat-hunting often involves wandering into an unfamiliar neighbourhood, then entering a flat for guided viewings with strangers: a man you have never met before, who could assum...

Former Miss Italy contestant left horrifically scarred after boyfriend threw acid in face

A former Miss Italy contestant has been left horrifically scarred and could lose her sight after her ex-boyfriend allegedly threw acid in her face. Gessica Notaro, 28, is in a serious but stable condition after the horror attack as she left her house in Rimini on the east coast of Italy. She has suffered deep burns to the face and eye and is in a specialist unit in hospital. The acid also damaged her hip and leg. Police have arrested Gessica's ex-boyfriend, 29-year-old Jorge Edson Tavares. The pair met while working at the 'Delfinario' attraction, an aquarium which features dolphin shows. Facebook Gessica also had a career as a TV presenter after becoming a finalist in the 2007 Miss Italy competition. But Tavares, from Cape Verde, was issued with a harassment order after t...

Obama ends decades old policy for Cuban migrants

US President Barack Obama has scrapped rules dating back to the 1960s, which allowed those fleeing communist Cuba a fast track to US citizenship. US President Barack Obama on Thursday ended a decades-old policy that allowed Cuban migrants who arrived illegally on US soil to stay. In one of his final acts before leaving the White House, he scrapped rules allowing those fleeing communist Cuba and reaching American territory a fast track to permanent resident status. Obama said the move would bring greater consistency to our immigration policy. Effective immediately, Cuban nationals who attempt to enter the United States illegally and do not qualify for humanitarian relief will be subject to removal, consistent with US law and enforcement priorities, he said in a statement. What are your rights if you can’t get into work due to the snow?

With snow falling across Greater Manchester a few of us could find ourselves unable to get to work in the morning. Whether your car is stuck in the snow, or the bus, train or tram is not running, you may be unable to get to the office or your place of work due to the adverse weather. But what are your rights if you can't make it in due to the weather? We have all the answers. Will I be in trouble if I can't make it in? Your boss might be able to make you take unpaid leave, holiday days or work flexible hours to make up time even if you legitimately can't make it in. But if you show you've made an effort and speak to them early, a reasonable boss shouldn't penalise you. It's worth checking your contract or staff handbook, though, in case there's anything in it about extreme...

Hungarian reporter who kicked migrants gets probation

The scenes took place as hundreds of migrants broke through a police line at a collection point close to the Serbian border. The Hungarian camerawoman who was filmed kicking and possibly tripping migrants along the country's border with Serbia was sentenced Thursday to three years' probation for disorderly conduct. Petra Laszlo, who appeared in the Szeged District Court by remote video from an undisclosed location, mounted a tearful defense and said she would appeal. Judge Illes Nanasi said Laszlo's behavior "ran counter to societal norms" and said the facts of the case did not support Laszlo's self-defense claim. The incident occurred near the border town of Roszke on Sept. 8, 2015, where Laszlo had gone to film migrants from the Middle East who were trying to pass throug...
