12 Things You Should Never Do on Airplanes

You already know what not to do on a plane if you don't want to be a giant jerk. (Exhibit A: Man watching iPad movie without headphones. Exhibit B: Woman eating pungent tuna wrap.) But best practices can be less obvious for considerate humans who just want to make it from point A to point B safely. If you're one of these people, avoid these behaviors the next time you fly: 1. Sleeping through takeoff or landing. When the plane ascends or descends, the air pressure around you changes faster than the air inside your ears. If you've ever flown before, you know this can be super uncomfortable — but only temporarily. To equalize the pressure, all you need to do is chew gum; inhale, then exhale gently as you hold your mouth and nose shut; suck on candy; or yawn, according to Med...

Government loses Supreme Court case over Article 50

Theresa May needs the approval of Parliament to trigger the Brexit process, Britain's most senior judges have ruled. The Supreme Court has decided that MPs must be given a vote on triggering Article 50, the formal mechanism for leaving the European Union. The Prime Minister has said she intends to do this by the end of March, and the Government is now expected to quickly publish a bill in an effort to stick to that timetable. Theresa May Although it is thought to be unlikely that the Government will lose a vote in Parliament, the Supreme Court's decision, by an 8-3 majority, could hold up the Brexit process. Labour has said it will table a number of amendments and seek more details on the Government's negotiation strategy, the SNP has vowed to vote against the plans and th...

If every nuclear weapon on Earth is launched what happens

As of 2017 there are 14,900 nuclear warheads and most of them belong to either the US (6,800) or Russia (7,000). The UK has 215, China 260, North Korea, 10 and a few other countries hold a handful of nuclear bombs. According to the Commission for the Comprehensive nuclear-test-ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), the largest nuclear explosion in history was the 1961 Soviet Union Tsar Bomba. The test measured 50 megatons, which was more than 3,800 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. And that’s just one bomb. Not all nuclear weapons have the same capabilities, but US and Russia have the most powerful kind: thermonuclear weapons. The US has the B83 – a nuclear bomb which generates 1.2 megatons of TNT – the equivalent of 79 Hiroshima atomic bombs. With that in mind, here’...

Arrests after gang rape streamed on Facebook

Arrests after gang rape streamed on Facebook Police have arrested three men in Sweden suspected of a gang rape that was livestreamed on Facebook. Officers raided an apartment and took the suspects, aged 18, 20 and 24, into custody while they were still with the victim, aged 30. The arrests happened in Uppsala, north of Stockholm, on Sunday, after members of an online group raised the alarm. The closed Facebook group the alleged attack was streamed through has 60,000 members. One of the first to call the authorities was Josefine Lundgren, 21. She told Sweden's Expressen newspaper that one of the suspects "tore the clothes off" his victim before raping her. The attacker also had apparently filmed everything and took pictures that he put on (messaging site) Snapchat, she said...

Trump withdraws from Trans-Pacific Partnership amid flurry of orders

Donald Trump has begun his effort to dismantle Barack Obama’s legacy, formally scrapping a flagship trade deal with 11 countries in the Pacific rim. The new president also signed executive orders to ban funding for international groups that provide abortions, and placing a hiring freeze on non-military federal workers. Trump’s decision not to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) came as little surprise. During his election campaign he railed against international trade deals, blaming them for job losses and focusing anger in the industrial heartland. Obama had argued that this deal would provide an effective counterweight to China in the region. “Everyone knows what that means, right?” Trump said at Monday’s signing ceremony in the White House. “We’ve been talking abou...
