Police were made aware of a robbery in Commercial Road, close to Watney St. last night about 6pm. The driver of a vehicle was squirted in the face with a noxious type liquid and his vehicle was stolen. This was later recovered in Hackney.
The victim was treated at the scene for a burning sensation to his skin, but did not require further treatment. Although the liquid is unknown, the police have said it was potentially a bleach type liquid as it discoloured the victims shirt.
The suspects made off in the stolen vehicle and on a moped.
John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets said: “We know some of our residents are very concerned about this attack. The police have confirmed the incident was not like the terrible attack involving acid that recently took place in Newham.
“We will continue to work closely with the police to do everything we can to keep our residents safe. The police are continuing investigations into this robbery.”
Councillor Asma Begum, Cabinet Member for Safety added: “Our residents’ safety is an absolute priority. I would urge people to stay calm and vigilant as the police investigation continues. We will share information updates as soon as they are made available by the police.”
