Muslim acid attack victim speaks out

The victim of an acid attack in London has said that if it happened to a white person, it’d be all over the news. Jameel Muhktar and his cousin Resham Khan were left with life-changing injuries when a man threw acid through their car window as they sat in traffic in Newham, London. Muhktar spoke out about the incident for the first time yesterday in an interview with Channel 4 News, calling the attack a hate crime. I honestly feel that if this was a white person that got attacked by an Asian person he’d be caught within 24 hours. It’d be all over the news, there’d be a national manhunt, Muhktar told Channel 4 News yesterday. I believe it’s something to do with Islamophobia. I’ve never seen this guy in my life. I don’t have any problems with anybody. My cousin is 21, she’s ...

Turkish military base in Qatar complicates the situation

Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Turkey Walid Al-Khuraiji has said that the Turkish base in Qatar complicates the situation. He also expressed Riyadh’s hope that Ankara would take a neutral position on the crisis with Doha. Any regional forces are mistaken if they think that their intervention will solve the issue, and we expect these forces to respect the existing regional order and to resolve any emergency issue, Al-Khuraiji said in an interview with Turkey’s daily newspaper Daily Sabah. We hoped that Ankara would stay impartial for the sake of keeping good relations with all the Gulf countries, he said. When Ankara sided with Doha, it lost its neutrality as an unbiased party seeking mediation, he said. Bringing foreign armies from regional countries, and armored mechanisms,...

PM’s European court stance has hamstrung Brexit negotiations

Theresa May’s absolutist stance on Britain leaving the jurisdiction of the European court of justice has hamstrung David Davis in negotiations with Brussels, according to the Brexit secretary’s former chief of staff. James Chapman, who worked for George Osborne before serving as Davis’s chief of staff until shortly before the election, said May’s insistence that the ECJ must not have oversight once Britain leaves the EU, revealed in her party conference speech last year, had made the negotiators’ task more difficult. She’s taken some absolutist positions on particular issues – I’m thinking of the European court of justice, he told the BBC’s Week in Westminster. She’s set a red line effectively for a conference speech that hamstrung these negotiations in my view, said Chapm...

Grenfell survivor still having rent deducted for wrecked flat

A woman who fled the Grenfell Tower fire found she was still having rent deducted for her wrecked flat by the council, a campaigner said. Yvette Williams, a coordinator for Justice 4 Grenfell, said the survivor made the discovery when she obtained a new bank card and saw her statement. A Tory Kensington and Chelsea councillor said she was very sorry to hear the claims. Catherine Faulks stressed she was not saying it's a tiny thing, and acknowledged it would be very upsetting for the affected person, but insisted the council is providing a a lot of hand-holding for survivors, including assigning an individual social worker to each family. Ms Williams said she received a call from the distressed survivor on Friday. She came to me and said she had just got her bank card and t...

Doctor who killed one at NYC hospital was aggressive

After he was forced to resign as a family medicine doctor amid sexual harassment allegations, he threatened his colleagues. He said he would kill them. On Friday, Bello returned to Bronx Lebanon Hospital with an AR-15 assault rifle tucked under his white lab coat and opened fire in his old department, killing one doctor and critically wounding six other people at the hospital, according to law enforcement officials. Bello then shot himself, and staggered, bleeding, into a hallway where he collapsed and died with the rifle at his side, officials said. A photo showed the doctor on a blood-spattered floor as police stood over him. Now, detectives are trying to piece together what prompted Bello to snap two years after he was forced out, and whether he was hunting for someone ...
