Minister defends appointment of ex-judge as Grenfell inquiry chair

The government has defended the appointment of a retired appeal court judge to lead the inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire and hinted that his remit could be widened, after he faced calls to resign from two Labour MPs. Five days after the appointment of Sir Martin Moore-Bick as head of the inquiry, the MP for Kensington, Emma Dent Coad, and the new shadow fire minister, Chris Williamson, called for him to resign, citing scepticism about him from survivors and frustration at the apparently narrow remit of the inquiry. The justice secretary and lord chancellor, David Lidington, defended Moore-Bick’s appointment and insisted he would consult residents before agreeing the scope of the inquiry. That is, at least, the view of Aisha, the wife of another immigrant to the so-called Islamic caliphate now under Kurdish guard in a refugee camp in Syria. In an exclusive interview with Sky News, Aisha (her real name is being withheld) insisted that very few immigrants to the 'caliphate' wanted to join the war. And that includes Sally Jones. I asked her: Did you meet many British people? She replied: I know one - Umma Hussain al Britani. She used Jones' nom de guerre. Junaid Hussain was IS' chief of digital jihad. He was killed by a US drone in 2015 while planning terror pl...

PM approach to Lib Dems for help

Theresa May has reportedly approached the Liberal Democrats for help in pushing legislation through Parliament. The Prime Minister's new chief of staff Gavin Barwell spoke to senior Lib Dem figures in a bid to secure potentially crucial support from the party's MPs on mutual priorities, The Times reported. The Conservatives and the Lib Dems broadly agree on some policies, such as mental health reforms. Mr Barwell was said to have spoke to his opposite number, Tim Farron's chief of staff Ben Williams, and at least one high-profile Lib Dem MP in the hope of securing Parliamentary votes. Departing leader Mr Farron has previously ruled out any Parliamentary pacts or coalitions, but that stance would not preclude discussions on supporting the Government on individual issues. A ...
