The Big Ben is about to fall in next four years

The chimes of the world’s most iconic clock are to be silenced for the next four years while major conservation works are carried out. Big Ben’s famous bongs will sound for the last time at noon on Monday, August 21, before they are paused until 2021 - ending more than 150 years of almost continuous timekeeping. The Elizabeth Tower, home to the Great Clock and Big Ben, is undergoing a complex programme of renovation aimed at preserving the landmark for future generations. A man with arguably one of the best job titles in the world, Keeper of the Great Clock Steve Jaggs said: “Big Ben falling silent is a significant milestone in this crucial conservation project. US tax change proposals anger builders, realtors, charities

With US Congress members focused during their August recess on finding ways to lower the corporate tax rate, industry groups and other sectors of society are gearing up to fight proposed changes to the personal income tax. While tax cuts for business have garnered the most headlines, lobbyists and lawmakers have conceded that rewriting the corporate tax code will be a long slog. Tackling personal tax rates will be easier, many argue. Looking for an easier legislative win ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, most lawmakers in the Republican majority want to cut individual incomes taxes. President Donald Trump has been pushing hard for tax changes this year. Still, proposed changes to the personal tax code have already stirred opposition from realtors, home builders, mortgag...

First time given official warning to Breast cancer charity for unauthorised payments and failed to keep proper records

A charity that made unauthorised payments and failed to keep proper records of decision-making is the first to have received an official warning from the Charity Commission. The Derbyshire based National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline was set up by Wendy Watson in 1996 after she underwent a pre-emptive double mastectomy the same procedure that Hollywood star Angelina Jolie had four years earlier, when she was 37. Figures from the accounts show that in 2014/15 the charity's total expenses were £909,634 of which only three per cent, or £27,403, was listed as being spent on charitable activities, with £874,539 set down as fundraising expenses and other costs. The following financial year, total expenses were £947,824, of which £929,975 was spent on charitable activities. T...

National Obesity awareness campaign launch in 2015 at east London's Copperbox arena. The 14 per cent increase in just 12 months is against a background of Tower Hamlets council’s long-running campaign to reduce obesity with health programmes in schools.
