Flash sweeps take weapons off the streets

A series of co-ordinated operations by the police, council and Tower Hamlets Homes is targeting areas where criminals are operating across the borough to remove illegal drugs and offensive weapons. Intelligence from the partners is being used to deliver "Flash Sweeps", where officials work with local residents and faith leaders to check neighbourhoods for dangerous goods and confiscate them. Two foot long, serrated "Zombie Knives", large kitchen knives and a machete have been found and seized during the first three sweeps. Needles, baseball bats, hammers and poles were also removed during the organised searches. John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said: "These knife sweeps are a great example of the work the police and council are doing to tackle knife crime and take these savage weapons o...

This power pose morning habit can make your whole day better

For most people, waking up an hour earlier in the morning is a lofty (and often laughable!) goal. But a Harvard psychologist may have found the perfect way to rise and shine and actually mean it this time. Before you even toss the covers off and put your feet on the floor, strike a pose. More specifically, strike a power pose! Here’s what we mean: Harvard psychologist Amy Cuddy recommends taking time to stretch in bed every morning. And she’s not just talking about a meager shrug or twist, but a huge, body-wide expansion. You should feel it from the tips of your toes to the tops of your fingers and don’t be afraid to take up the entire bed. When you power pose, as the theory is called, you trick your brain into thinking you are more confident than you feel. Making your bod...

Rashan did not swallow drugs

An object removed from the throat of a black man who died after a police chase did not contain a controlled substance, according to forensic analysis. Police had said that Rashan Charles had become ill after he was seen trying to swallow an object when he entered a shop in Hackney. The 20-year-old died after being chased and restrained by police on Saturday 22 July, and the Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation. An unverified video, widely shared on social media, showed a police officer wrestling him to the ground, then restraining Mr Charles around his neck as he struggled on the floor. Mr Charles then stopped moving as he was handcuffed by the officer, and appeared unresponsive as a member of the public sat on him. He was pronounced dead ...

Body found after Minneapolis school explosion in USA

A second body has been found in the rubble of a collapsed school building in Minneapolis after an explosion killed a school employee and injured several others, fire officials said Wednesday night. The explosion at the Minnehaha Upper School at approximately 10:20 a.m. caused two floors of the Christian private school to collapse over a sub-basement, Fire Chief John Fruetel said. Family members and co-workers identified one victim as Ruth Berg, whose body was recovered from the rubble Wednesday afternoon. Fruetel said the second body was recovered around 8 p.m. Wednesday. He added that the medical examiner's office is working to notify relatives. Seven other adults were hospitalized, including three with critical injuries. Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Tyner confirmed that th...

Father speaks out who had sex with teacher on flight

The boy who had sex with his teacher on a flight home from a school trip, did not want her to lose her job as a result of their fling, his father has said. Eleanor Wilson was struck off by a professional conduct panel after it emerged she had had oral and full sex with a 16-year-old pupil. The 28-year-old former physics teacher had already been sacked from her job at the school in Bristol in May 2016. A friend said the pupil, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had bragged about sleeping with Ms Wilson on a school charity trip to Swaziland. He had also shown them raunchy text messages between the pair, they said. He said they had sex a lot on the trip to Africa and on the flight back, they told the MailOnline. But the boy's father, who cannot be named for legal reasons,...

Junior doctor found dead at hospital

A junior doctor was found dead at a hospital where he worked after he reportedly killed himself. The unnamed medic, a man in his 30s, is understood to have been discovered in the doctors' academy building at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton on Monday night. Colleagues were first on the scene before police were called, Somerset Live reports. The sudden death has been referred to a coroner. The Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust said it had been supporting the man before his death but is now asking the question if this support was all that we could possibly have given. A message reportedly sent to staff said the junior doctor had apparently taken his own life. The email from Chief executive Dr Sam Barrell and his deputy Peter Lewis, posted on the Health Service Journ...
