Japanese woman dies from overwork after logging 159 hours of overtime in a month

Japan has again been forced to confront its work culture after labour inspectors ruled that the death of a 31-year-old employee of the country’s public broadcaster, NHK, had been caused by overwork. Miwa Sado, who worked at the broadcaster’s headquarters in Tokyo, logged 159 hours of overtime and took only two days off in the month leading up to her death from heart failure in July 2013. A labour standards office in Tokyo later attributed her death to karoshi (death from overwork) but her case was only made public by her former employer this week. Sado’s death is expected to increase pressure on Japanese authorities to address the large number of deaths attributed to the punishingly long hours expected of many employees. The announcement comes a year after a similar ruling...

The Sexist Bullying of Britain’s Prime Minister Must Stop

Theresa May has just given one of the most unfortunate and embarrassing speeches ever delivered by a British prime minister to their annual party conference. The toe curling endurance test was interrupted by a comedian’s stunt, a coughing fit, and a sore throat that reduced her voice, at times, to a whisper. While she was speaking, a letter fell from the slogan on the wall behind her as social media commentators rushed to observe: It was an F off for the Tories. The unfortunate series of events which were largely out of her control came at an awful time for a beleaguered leader who has been derided and diminished by members of her own party at a moment when she is fighting to keep hold of her job. We don’t know which unnamed party insiders have briefed the newspapers that ...

Man guilty of showing beheading video to children

A man who showed a video of a beheading to two young children has been found guilty of spreading terrorist propaganda. Zameer Ghumra brainwashed the two boys, claiming Islamic State were not bad people and asking the children if they wanted to join the terrorist group or help recruit others. He also instructed them to only have Muslim friends. The 38-year-old was found guilty of disseminating terrorist propaganda in the form of a graphic Twitter video on his mobile phone following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court. Ghumra taught the children how to survive a bomb attack and fight with knives, giving them sweets to keep them on-side, the court heard. The jury was told that the children were told they would have to behead people when they arrived in Syria. Ghumra was working...

What the papers say about Theresa May’s conference speech

The prime minister’s disaster-stricken address in Manchester drew scorn from traditional critics and supporters alike Thursday’s front pages will make agonising reading for Theresa May, as the fallout from her “nightmare” speech to the Conservative party conference continues. Virtually all the broadsheets and the vast majority of the tabloids led with the address, which was overshadowed by a faulty backdrop and coughing fits from the prime minister, who was handed a P45 by a prankster. May will find the reaction from normally supportive elements of the national press particularly concerning, with some papers even suggesting her future in No 10 is now in major doubt. May is on a final warning after the most shambolic conference speech in memory, according to the Times, whic...
