A British man sentenced who handed over to the man’s waist

A British man facing a three-year jail sentence in Dubai for putting his hand on a man in a bar so he did not bump and spill drinks has been sentenced to a month in prison on a separate charge. Jamie Harron, 27, has been convicted of public indecency as he awaits the verdict on the other charge against him, according to reports. A spokesman for the prosecution service in Dubai said: On the drinking charge, he has been sentenced to a month in jail, fined 2,000 dirhams (£412) and will be deported. His next appearance on the public indecency case is on October 22. The electrician, from Scotland, had been told to remain in the city for future court hearings. The UK Foreign Office’s advice for drinking in Dubai states: Non-Muslim residents can get a liquor licence to drink alco...

Donald Trump coming to visit UK but might not see the Queen

Diplomats are discussing plans for a working visit by the US president that will be shorn of the pomp and flummery of a full-blown State Visit. And instead of a red carpet event to showcase the special relationship, it is likely to form part of a tour of several countries by Mr Trump. The downgrading of Mr Trump’s first trip as President to the UK follows the huge controversy when Theresa May tried to steal a march on other world leaders by offering a State Visit as guest of the Queen that was intended to take place this summer, breaching a convention that the honour is usually reserved for a president’s second term. There were threats of boycotts and mass protests when the VIP treatment was announced - with Commons Speaker John Bercow declaring that the President would no...

Toxicity charge to help clean up air quality

A new road charge in London will be introduced next month to help tackle emissions from the oldest polluting vehicles. The Toxicity Charge is being introduced by Transport for London. From Monday 23 October as part of a package of actions intended to help clean up London's dangerously polluted air, a new charge for drivers will be in place. The T-Charge is an additional charge to the existing Congestion Charge scheme and entails a £10 supplement for vehicles that do not meet the Euro 4 standards for both PM and NOx (largely equating to vehicles registered before 2006 or over 10 years old). It only applies in Congestion Charge hours Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm and to the same area. This excludes bank holidays and the period between Christmas Day and New Year's Day inclusive. There is a...

Tower Hamlets Council Explores Loneliness as health risk

Ahead of this year's World Mental Health Day on 10 October, Tower Hamlets Council is sharing its findings on how loneliness can affect anyone. Loneliness is increasingly recognised as a serious health concern having a detrimental impact on health and wellbeing, affecting people of all ages. Mayor John Biggs said: The council and its partners are looking to tackle loneliness more widely and these projects provided a valuable insight into what we can do as a community to make life better for residents suffering from loneliness. Reducing loneliness not only improves people's health and wellbeing, transforming their lives, but also reduces the strain on health and care services. A video was commissioned to capture two projects that further explored loneliness. The 'Community Perspectives on Lo...

Tower Hamlets Counil pays for 23 more Police Officers on the beat

John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, has announced a multi-million pound investment in community safety to increase the number of council funded police officers in the borough to thirty-nine (39). The Mayor raised concerns that cuts to the police's budget has reduced the number of police in Tower Hamlets and has committed £3m of funding over the next three years to help protect neighbourhood policing. The police officers are tasked with tackling areas where crime and anti-social behaviour are issues and they will tackle acid attacks, drug dealing and violent crime. 14 officers will be responsible for tackling crime on estates and 25 additional officers will work across the borough. A new 'Designing Out Crime' officer will also help planners, housing providers and developers to ensure that f...
