London Tories threaten breakaway from party ahead of local polls

The Conservatives in London have reportedly held secret discussions about a potential breakaway from the national party, amid fears of an electoral wipeout in the local elections next month. Senior Tories have hosted a series of meetings over the past year in order to draw up plans for a separate party which would boast its own brand, policies and figurehead separate to Theresa May . The disclosure is deeply embarrassing for Mrs May, who is braced for the party’s worst performance in the capital in its 184-year history, when the ballots are cast next month. According to analysis conducted by Lord Hayward and Tony Travers, a respected academic, the Conservatives are expected to lose almost 100 seats in the capital, falling from 612 to 519, while all nine councils...

UK agents find lab behind spy plot

Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia Security services located the source of the nerve agent used to poison Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, it has been claimed. According to reports, officials found the Russian laboratory where the novichik poison was made in the days after the attack on March 4. This comes after the chief of the Ministry of Defence's Porton Down laboratory said it had 'not verified the precise source' of the Novichok nerve agent - prompting a furious backlash from Russia. A Whitehall source told The Times: We knew pretty much by the time of the first Cobra [the emergency co-ordination briefing that took place the same week] that it was overwhelmingly likely to come from Russia. Brussels issued a strong statement in support of ...

YouTube shooter visited firing range

The vegan activist suspected of shooting three people at YouTube’s California headquarters visited a local shooting range for practice just hours before the attack, police said. Nasim Aghdam, a self-proclaimed vegan activist who published videos on the site, was found dead at the scene with a self-inflicted wound on Tuesday. San Bruno police chief Ed Barberini said she legally owned the semi-automatic handgun which was used in the shooting. Three people were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. Two women were released on Tuesday night but a 36-year-old man remained in a serious condition. She had criticised YouTube on her website and accused the video-sharing site of reducing the money she was able to make. Youtube filtered my channels to keep them from getting...

North Korea could reach UK

North Korea is almost certain to complete development within 18 months of ballistic missiles capable of reaching the UK, according to a Commons defence select committee report. The report says the missiles could potentially carry nuclear warheads and it says the UK has only a limited ballistic missile defence capability. But it adds a crucial caveat: The Ministry of Defence does not consider that the UK will be a target of North Korean nuclear missiles, as its regime does not believe the UK to be a threat. The focus of North Korean military planning is mainly the US and South Korea, it says. If there were a conflict in the region, the UK would have no legal obligation to provide military assistance. Yet, in the event of North Korean aggression against South Korea a...

The Wild Card in the Russia Spy Case

Russia has been working overtime this past month to absolve itself of alleged involvement in the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia on British soil. It has claimed that it does not possess Novichok, the military-grade nerve agent used in the attack. It has accused the United Kingdom and its allies of spearheading an anti-Russia crusade. It has even gone so far as to suggest that the U.K. might itself have been behind the attack. But, lacking evidence to back up such claims, Moscow’s effort to cast doubt on the accusations against it have been futile. That is, until British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson stepped in. The deletion came just one day after Gary Aitkenhead, Porton Down’s chief executive, told Sky News the lab was unable to pin...
