Sainsbury’s and Asda in shock merger talks

Sainsbury's and Asda J Sainsbury and Wal-Mart, the world's biggest supermarket retailer, are in advanced talks about a shock tie-up that would create ‎a more powerful rival to Tesco, the UK market leader. Sky News can exclusively reveal that the two companies are in negotiations about combining Wal-Mart's Asda business with Sainsbury's, in a deal that would send shockwaves through the entire British retail industry. Sources said an announcement could be made as early as Monday, or even sooner if the two sides are forced to accelerate their public disclosures. It was unclear this weekend how a deal would be structured, including whether Wal-Mart would reverse Asda into Sainsbury's while taking a big stake in the combined group. Another huge uncertainty surrounding ...

Melania Trump can’t go outside

Melania Trump in private is excellent company, according to Brigitte Macron but unlike the French first lady, her US counterpart cannot so much as poke her nose outdoors. Speaking to Le Monde at the end of the French presidential couple’s three day state visit to Washington, Brigitte said the 48-year-old former model from Slovenia was actually really fun. We have the same sense of humour. We laugh a lot together. But Melania cannot do anything, the French first lady said. She can’t even open a window at the White House. She can’t go outside. She’s much more constrained than I am. I go out every day in Paris. The French first lady said she, too, was aware that she had to be careful what I say. I have the impression that every word is a word too many, I’m constantly ...

Two men were injured by car outside Birmingham mosque

Police are investigating after two men were injured in a hit and run incident outside a mosque in Birmingham. The victims, who are both in their 20s, were hit by a silver car as they stood outside the Shah Jalal mosque in Aston. One was said to have suffered a head injury while the other was described by West Midlands police as walking wounded. West Midlands police said they had not ruled out the possibility that the incident could be terrorism-related. They are trying to trace the driver of the car who did not stop at the scene. Officers were called to Ettington Road at 2.15pm, after the Friday congregational prayers. Witnesses said the two victims were left covered in blood, with one of the men being knocked on to the bonnet of a parked car, which police have co...

What President Trump can expect on his visit to Britain

President Trump’s on-again, off-again visit to Britain is on again for this summer. But Mr. Trump most likely will not get the honors of a traditional state visit, a highly ceremonial and very British affair, when he arrives on July 13. Here is what he can expect. What will be missing? Invitations for state visits, extended by Queen Elizabeth II on the advice of the government, are rare, honorific and convey a strong relationship between Britain and the country of the visiting foreign leader. But just how different in substance such visits are from working or official visits is less obvious. A state visit is a firmly structured event over four days, including talks, pageants, a banquet and a visit outside London. A working visit does not include the pomp, but st...

Cladding replaced at Randall House

Unsafe aluminium composite (ACM) cladding has been removed from Randall House in Poplar and its replacement with safe cladding material is now complete after action from Tower Hamlets Council and its development partner Guildmore. Following the Grenfell Tower fire, in June 2017, the Government instructed building owners to identify residential tower blocks over 18 metres in height where Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) cladding had been used. This review identified that the cladding buildup used to part of the north façade at Randall House fell short of the standard required when subjected to independent testing. Mark Baigent, Interim Divisional Director Housing and Regeneration at Tower Hamlets Council said: Residents can be assured that their home now has safe fire resi...

Forty years after Altab Ali

Council remembers murder that united community against racism. Forty years on from the racially motivated murder of Altab Ali in 1978 - an incident, which marked a significant turning point in east London's race relations - a series of events will take place in Tower Hamlets. Altab, a 25-year old textile worker had recently arrived in the UK from Bangladesh. He was returning home from work in nearby Brick Lane when he was fatally stabbed in a park in Whitechapel that now bears his name. His killing mobilised communities in Tower Hamlets to take a stand against hatred and intolerance. Tower Hamlets Council will host a ceremonial event at 6pm on Friday 4 May to mark Altab Ali Day. Will Tuckley, Chief Executive of Tower Hamlets Council, said: "Altab Ali's terrible murder reminds us that...
