Brexit divorce bill could rise by £7billion

The true cost of the Brexit divorce bill could be more than £7bn higher than the £39bn estimated by the government, the official financial watchdog has suggested. The National Audit Office said that "relatively small changes" to Treasury forecasts could lead to a significantly higher exit bill. It warned that the European Union could "skew" future decisions to increase the size of the Brexit divorce bill. Priti Patel, a eurosceptic Tory MP and former Cabinet minister, said: "Ministers must make sure the EU cannot force the financial settlement to be higher and should be working to lower it as much as possible. We’ve already paid hundreds of billions of pounds into the EU and the British taxpayer has had enough of the EU ripping us off." The NAO said that Britain c...

Plans are unveiled for a new public square for Whitechapel two consultation events next week

Two public exhibitions will be held in Whitechapel next week to give local people a chance to view plans for a new public space, with a working title of London Square  in Whitechapel. Located between the new Tower Hamlets Town Hall at the Grade II listed former Royal London Hospital site which will come into use in 2022 and Bart's Royal London Hospital, the square is a key part of the Whitechapel regeneration plans. The events are being jointly delivered by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in partnership with Barts Health NHS Trust. The exhibition will give local residents, workers and visitors to the area an opportunity to view the initial designs and give their feedback on the intended design of this new public space. The suggested uses for the new public square include: Oc...

Good news for primary school places in Tower Hamlets

More children across Tower Hamlets got a place at the primary school they most wanted this year. More than 97 per cent of children across the borough will start their education in 2018 at one of their chosen primary schools. And some 2,930 families have been offered their first preference school, which accounts for 89 per cent of all applications. This is an improvement on the previous year and amongst the best results for all boroughs in London. Only a very small proportion of families (2.4 per cent) were not successful in securing a place at their  preferred school and so have been given a place by the council. Debbie Jones, Director of Children's services in Tower Hamlets said:  "Our team has worked very hard so that we can offer families a good choice in primary schools and we are p...

Oldest inmate put to death in US

Three decades after a bombing campaign claimed the life of a federal judge, set off panic and prompted a sprawling federal investigation, authorities in Alabama executed the now-83-year-old man convicted in the explosions. The lethal injection of Walter Leroy Moody Jr. on Thursday night made him the oldest inmate put to death in the modern era. And in a sign of how death row populations are aging amid a nationwide decline in executions, Moody became the eighth inmate older than 65 put to death since the beginning of 2015. Moody, who maintained his innocence in the bombings, was convicted in 1991 on federal charges and then in 1996 on state charges. The FBI calls what followed the explosions one of the largest cases in our history, with investigators scouring the deb...
