Islamic State Beatles warn of more attacks in Europe

Two men accused of being members of the Islamic State Beatles cell have told Sky News there will be more IS-inspired attacks in Europe. Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh, who were captured by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) earlier this year, issued the warning in a Sky News interview. They said they did not die on the battlefield because God decreed it was not their destiny. The men, both from west London, did not deny being members of the four man British IS cell, and seemed unrepentant. Speaking to Sky News at a detention facility in Kurdish-controlled northern Syria, they said they would wait for a court to prove they were directly part of the group that held 20 hostages and oversaw the beheading of seven. They did not specifically condemn te...

Queen Elizabeth jokes about Trump and his plane

In any other circumstance, two 91-year-olds strolling slowly around a garden, complaining about the prevalence of noisy aircraft would hardly be of note. But when that elderly couple happens to be the Queen and Sir David Attenborough, old friends and undisputed national treasures, the nature of their conversation is rather more of interest. The Queen could not contain her irritation. Why do they go round and round when you want to talk? she pondered aloud. Poking fun at the noisy aircraft favoured by US leaders, she joked: Sounds like President Trump or President Obama. It is not the first time the monarch has expressed frustration about living under a flight path. In a pre-recorded message, she told BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners Question Time: I very much hope you hav...

Ex Russian spy daughter Yulia released from hospital

The Russian embassy to the UK has congratulated Yulia Skripal on her recovery from a nerve agent attack that Britain and an array of Western allies blamed on Russia. Yulia Skripal was released from hospital on Tuesday after she and her father, a former Russian double agent, were poisoned in Salisbury in southern England last month. In a message posted on Twitter, the Russian embassy stressed the need for urgent proof that what is being done to her [Yulia] is done on her own free will. Sergei Skripal and his daughter were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury on March 4 following exposure to Novichok, a nerve agent. Sergei Skripal, a former colonel in Russian military intelligence, was convicted of selling Russian state secrets to Britain in 2006. He was traded...

Finger bone first found in Saudi Arabia more than 85,000 years ago

More than 85,000 years ago, the Arabian peninsula looked very different from the vast, sandy expanse people see today. The region was a lush grassland, seasonally greening with every rainy period, and dotted by hundreds of freshwater lakes. Researchers have found evidence in the sands of aquatic- and semi-aquatic mammals, such as hippos, which are more commonly associated with the African subcontinent. They've also found stone tools the suggest an early human presence on the peninsula, but no direct fossil evidence until now. A single human finger bone discovered in 2016 at an ancient lake site in Saudi Arabia called Al Wusta has now been dated to approximately 88,000 years ago, according to a new study in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution. We have found 10,...

At least a dozen other people were taken to hospital. Rescue teams have reached the scene. The driver was speeding and lost control at the edge of the gorge, police officer Sunil Kumar said, adding that the rescue operation would continue into the night.
