Two public exhibitions will be held in Whitechapel next week to give local people a chance to view plans for a new public space, with a working title of London Square in Whitechapel.
Located between the new Tower Hamlets Town Hall at the Grade II listed former Royal London Hospital site which will come into use in 2022 and Bart’s Royal London Hospital, the square is a key part of the Whitechapel regeneration plans.
The events are being jointly delivered by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in partnership with Barts Health NHS Trust.
The exhibition will give local residents, workers and visitors to the area an opportunity to view the initial designs and give their feedback on the intended design of this new public space.
The suggested uses for the new public square include:
- Occasional outdoor food markets,
- Small seasonal and festive events
- Outdoor space for dining and relaxation
- Landscaping and greenery
- Play space provision
The consultation will also take soundings from people about possible names for the space which will be looked at as the development progresses over the coming months.
The two consultations days will be held on:
– Thursday 19 April 10am -2pm at The Royal London Hospital – Stepney Way entrance in the foyer
– Saturday 21st April, 11am -4pm at the Whitechapel Idea Store in the ground floor foyer.
Ann Sutcliffe, Corporate Director, Place Directorate at Tower Hamlets Council said:

The Whitechapel area is one of London’s most dense and diverse neighbourhoods. There is a vibrant mix of retail, commercial and community uses bringing a large number of people in to the area.
Public open space is at a premium and this is an opportunity to provide much needed public space for this busy urban area.
